Wayne Layman
August 27, 1958 – April 6, 2024

Passed peacefully away on Saturday, April 6th in the arms of his loving wife a very special husband, Wayne Layman, in his 65th year after a short battle with cancer. Geraldine (GED – Wayne’s pet name for her) was his caregiver at home for 4 months and he was moved to Palliative Care for less than 24 hours prior to his passing. Geraldine was finally able to become his wife again, not just a caregiver. She lay by his side in a hospital bed where they had their last and best sleep together on April 5th.
In heaven he will be embraced by his parents Carrie & Ern Layman, grandparents Isabel and Leo Layman and Margaret and George Dawe, sister Judy Abbott, and father-in-law Michael McGrath.
Left to mourn with a broken heart is his best friend, soulmate and wife of 32 years Geraldine (McGrath) who he absolutely adored. Wayne also leaves behind to mourn his brothers Ernie (Clare), Wally (Monica), sister Barb Nolan (Mike), mother-in-law Lucy McGrath who treated him like a son, sister-in-law Michelle McGrath (Chris Lane), brother-in-law Michael McGrath (fiancé Eva) as well as his nieces and nephews. Wayne will be sadly missed by his only surviving uncle, Wal Layman, his many cousins, and a large circle of family and friends which are too numerous to name.
Wayne was a long time worker with the City of St. John’s until his retirement in 2019. In his spare time he was an avid painter who learned the skill from his Dad and an avid gardener with Geraldine. He was a hard-working man and lovingly devoted his life to his wife Geraldine. Wayne loved to travel, especially to Florida where he and Geraldine would spend 8 weeks every year. He enjoyed travelling with friends and loved the Blueberry Festival in Brigus.
Wayne was a kind, compassionate, and caring man who always saw the best in people. He was a great advocate for those in need, always ready and willing to organize a fundraiser to help ease the burden for those less fortunate. Wayne was a perfect gentleman! He loved life and enjoyed it to the fullest. He was the life of any party and was always up for a good prank. Wayne was a loyal friend and somebody who could always be relied upon. His warm smile, kind nature, happy demeanour, and fun loving sense of humour will be dearly missed. He has left a lasting impact on the lives of those he touched and we were all truly blessed to have had him in our lives.
At this time there are so many people that I would like to thank: our family doctor, Dr. Tina Squires for her compassion and kindness (the real meaning of a family doctor); Dr. Ahmad, Dr. Kamran and the staff at the H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Clinic; Community Paramedicine; Community Health Nurse Linda; Dr. Heidi Brake and her Palliative Care Team; and Father Ciro Perez for visiting Wayne and administering his final blessing.
Resting at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road. Visitation on Monday, April 8th from 4:00 – 9:00 p.m. and Tuesday, April 9th from 2:00 – 9:00 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will take place at the Basilica of St. John the Baptist on Wednesday, April 10th, 2024 at . Cremation to follow.
As expressions of sympathy, flowers are gratefully accepted (which Wayne loved) or donations in Wayne’s memory may be made to a charity of one’s choice. To send a message of condolence or to sign the memorial guestbook, please visit www.cauls.ca
“Wayne I loved you more today than I did yesterday, and tomorrow I will love you more than I loved you today. I can no longer see you with my eyes, touch you with my hands, but I will feel you in my heart forever. I know that someday we will be together again and when we do, I will hold you in my arms and never let you go!” Rest in Peace my darling Wayne. Safe in the arms of Jesus!
