Verna Alice Pye
April 28, 1941 – May 28, 2024

It is with tremendous sadness that the family of the late Verna Alice Sandra Pye of Lodge Bay, Labrador announce her passing on May 28, 2024, at the wise age of 83 years. She passed peacefully at the Health Sciences Centre in the presence of loving family. Leaving to mourn with many precious and loving memories, her beloved husband of 59 years, Malcolm; daughters Dorothy (Brian), Lorna (Craig), Bonnie, Katherine (Scott), and Gracie (Sheldon); her son Brad (Christa); grandchildren Megan, Shane, Brittany, Cameron, Crystal, Amber, Kassidy, Blake, Mariah, Ariana, Adriana, Spencer, Hunter, Anderson; great-grandchildren Sebastian, Clyde, Dylan, Mariah Charlotte, Samuel, Rohan, Arrow, Aurora and Fabian; as well as a large circle of extended family and friends. Verna was predeceased by her mother Dorothy Pye, grandparents George & Alice Pye, in-laws Cecil & Viola Pye, and son-in-law Craig Rumbolt. She had a strong connection to her faith. Her family takes great comfort in the fact that she is now gone to be with her loved ones.
A true woman of Labrador, Verna loved more than anything to hunt, fish, trap and berry pick. She loved spending time at the cabin in St. Peter’s Gulley, having a good game of cards with friends, playing a tune on her accordion, sharing a good book, and suggesting recommendations for Netflix. A woman before her time in many regards, she had no problem taking the helm to a boat, navigating hunting grounds, and advocating for change in her small community. Verna loved her family fiercely and taught her children the value of working hard, that being loyal and trustworthy are admirable traits, and to appreciate the beauty of our bountiful Labrador.
Verna was a strong, independent woman who fought, despite ongoing health issues, right to the very end. She advocated for her own health until she was no longer able to do so. Her family will continue to advocate for improvements in health care for Labradorians in her memory. She leaves behind a legacy of great wisdom, cultural roots and connection to community. A celebration of life will be held at St. John the Baptist Church in Lodge Bay on June 8th at 2 pm. As expressions of sympathy donations will be graciously accepted for the Crohn’s & Colitis Foundation, Verna’s charity of choice. All donations will be forwarded by her family in her memory.
Verna’s family wishes to extend a heartfelt thank you to doctors, nurses, and health care team members who were involved in her care over the years.
Say not in grief that she is no more, but say in thankfulness that she was.
