It is with tremendous sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Michael Joseph Penney on May 4th, 2024, at the Leonard A Miller Centre surrounded by his loving wife and daughters.
Mike was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend. Left with fond and loving memories are; his wife, Sandra (nee Gillingham), his daughters Rachael (Ronnie) and Amanda (Chris), and his son Stacey (Maggie). Sister Shirley Clarke (Raymond, deceased), and brothers, Harold (Gladys, deceased), Tom (Bev), and Jack (Hilda, deceased). Also left with memories to cherish of their pop are his grandsons Evan, Ronnie and Aaron, and great granddaughter, Emma. Mike had many nieces and nephews who he loved dearly. Mike was a longshoremen on the St. John’s Waterfront for over 30 years. He will also be missed by his member brothers and sisters of the L.S.P.U Local 1953 I.L.A.
We also cannot forget his beloved furry companion, Teeko.
Predeceased by his parents, Harold (Hop) and Josephine Penney, his parents-in-law Reginald and Renie Gillingham, his sister Catherine (Cack), Cromwell, along with many more family who have left this world too soon.
Michael was born on August 18, 1951, the baby of the family to Harold and Josephine Penney. Mike met his wife Sandra in 1984, and they’ve been happily married for 26 years.
Mike was one of the most genuine, gentle and caring people you could ever meet in your life, and anyone who knew him, knew that all too well. He would give you the shirt off his back and expect nothing in return. He enjoyed spending time with his family and was always fond of a little hobby, be it up-keeping something around the house, or simply tending to some flowerbeds. He also enjoyed an occasional drink of Scotch and a scattered cigar in his camper or the garage.
Mike lived his life as a hard working man who cared for his family first and foremost, putting everyone else above himself. He will be forever loved and greatly missed by anyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Cremation has taken place. God looked around his garden, and He found an empty place. He then looked down upon this earth and saw your tired face. He put his arms around you and lifted you to rest, God’s garden must be beautiful, He always takes the best. He knew that you were suffering, He knew you were in pain, He knew that you would never get well on earth again. He saw that the road was getting rough, and the hills were hard to climb. So, he closed your weary eyelids and whispered, “peace be thine”. It broke our hearts to lose you, but you didn’t go alone, for part of us went with you, the day God called you home.
