Obituary
Passed peacefully away surrounded by her family on December 6, 2024, Mary (May) Kathleen McCloy (nee Kearns) age 95.
Predeceased by her husband, Alex; parents, William and Delia; sister, Bridgie; brother, Jimmy; and son, Ian.
She will be fondly remembered by her relatives in Ireland and Scotland. Left to celebrate her life are her sons, William (Melanie Nickless) and Paul (Lisa Harvey); daughters: Cora (Victor Tkachenko), Jean, Margaret and Ursula; and three very special grandchildren: Wilson, Allison and Patrick.
May was born in Ballindine, County Mayo, Ireland, and trained as a midwife and registered nurse in London, U.K. May worked as a nurse in both Dublin and London. She was fiercely independent, a lifelong learner, and open to adventure, immigrating to Canada in response to a call for nurses in St. John’s. Aside from her medical training, May received both Special Education and Vocational Education degrees, teaching in the Nursing Assistant Program at the College of Trades and Technology and as Nurse Instructor at the General Hospital. For several years at the rank of Captain, she instructed The Medical Assistants’ Program in the Canadian Armed Forces. May spent decades involved with Mary Queen of Peace Church including the Catholic Women’s League and serving on several teams, including bereavement. She advocated for improving maternity and family leave benefits from her various roles within the Nurses’ Union. May served as President of the St. John’s Figure Skating Club, working tirelessly with Alex and countless other parent volunteers to deliver annual ice shows that filled the Memorial Stadium and remain etched in our memories. After retiring from Nursing in 1989, with Alex she enjoyed travel, frequently visiting family and attending her childrens’ sporting events across Canada, the U.S., Ireland, Scotland, Asia and the South Pacific. She loved the pool and regularly swam until age 92 and continued her gardening passions wherever flowers bloomed. May encouraged and supported her children and grandchildren’s athletic, academic and musical pursuits. Bristol Street, where the family grew up, was a community unto itself, filled with lifelong friendships. May was always ready for a piping hot cup of tea, wherever the location.
A special thank you to the devoted staff at Agnes Pratt who made her feel at home and provided outstanding care. As well, her family doctor, Dr. Callahan-Dyer, provided excellent care for over 30 years.
