Obituary
With heavy hearts, we regret to announce the passing of our dear brother George who died on July 28 in the Palliative Care Unit of the Leonard A. Miller Center, St. John’s. George was born in Markland Cottage Hospital, Whitbourne, grew up in Dunville, Placentia Bay and made Mount Pearl his home.
He is predeceased by his parents, William Joseph (1924 – 2000) and B. Lillian (Simmons) Power (1921 – 2023).
He will be forever remembered by his brother, Gordon & Robin (Hillyard) Power; sisters, Carol (Power) & Phil Taaffe and Stephanie Power & Christopher Sharrock; nephews and nieces: Chris & Lisa (Turano) Bursey, Evan Power & Shannon Laity, Elliott & Robyn (Pearcey) Power, Lauren Power & Matthew Jewczyk. He will also be truly missed by his circle of wonderful friends.
George will be remembered for many things. He was a superb school teacher, one who remained friends with his students long after they had left his class. All his life, he was a dedicated music fan with an extensive classic rock and jazz collection. Car culture was always an obsession for him, and his pride and joy was his Mercury Marauder, a sought after car that caught the eye of enthusiasts across town, much to his pleasure. He was a prolific reader, enjoying the film reviews of Pauline Kael, the poetry of Seamus Heaney and so much more. The life and writings of Trappist monk and scholar Thomas Merton were a deeply felt spiritual guide for him. Last but certainly not least, George loved cats, most especially his handsome boy Caleb who was his companion for many years, a beloved heartbeat at his feet.
With enormous gratitude, thank you to all who offered support, visits, phone calls and rides. George spoke many times of your kindness and generosity. Special thanks to Dr. Rorke and staff at the H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Centre, the staff at 4 South B HSC and the staff at the Palliative Care Unit, Leonard A. Miller Centre.
We will miss our dear eldest brother so much. He was an extraordinarily kind, empathetic person who touched the lives of so many. To paraphrase the title of one of his favourite Bob Dylan songs, he will always have a tight connection to our hearts. Rest easy, George. You will always be loved.
Family will receive friends on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 from 2 p.m to 4 p.m and 7 p.m to 9 p.m at Caul’s Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road.
