Francis Patrick O’Brien
October 14, 1945 – May 5, 2024

Passed peacefully away on May 5, 2024, at St. Clare’s Mercy Hospital, Francis (Frank) Patrick O’Brien. Born October 14, 1945, to Jessica (nee Andrews) and Edward (Roche) O’Brien in St. John’s. Predeceased by his parents and parents-in-law, sister Mary (Ron), brother Gerry, sisters-in-law Marie and Marg (John, deceased).
Frank spent his youth growing up on Cabot St., attending school at St. Pat’s. He and Joan first met at a party and spent the night skylarking, picking at each other like young lovers do. Joan tugged on his hair and heard a “boing”, like Cupid’s arrow had struck them. He walked her home that night and the rest was history. They were married on April 23, 1966. Five children, seven grandchildren, and a lifetime of beautiful memories later, Frank and Joan had 58 amazing, adoring years together.
Leaving to mourn, loving wife Joan (nee Connolly), children Stephanie (Craig), Sean (Lisa), Stephen (Greg), Heather (Neal), and Dennis (Rebecca); grandchildren Parker, Shaylynn (Robbie), Jenna (Ben), their father Bernard, Nicholas (Sarah), Nathan (Rebecca), Riley, and Kallie; his beloved dog Meggie and cat Ditta; siblings Dot (Patrick), Richard (Carol), Barb (Bert, deceased), Joey; sister-in-law Madonna (John, deceased).
Frank was a quiet man of few words, but those words were highly respected. He knew something about everything and inspired us all. He loved music, history, and being outside. He always had a song to sing or a little tune to hum. He loved trips to the cabin in Marysvale; it was his happy place. We always say he retired twice: once from his career as a butcher, then from taxiing. What started as a weekend hobby turned into a passion. No one could ever navigate the streets of St. John’s like he could. His Parkinson’s diagnosis may have cut this passion short, but he never let it win.
Special thank you to Dr. Megan Dawe and Dr. Alan Goodridge and his team for their care over the years. Also, a special thank you to the paramedics for their help, as well as physicians and nurses of St. Clare’s emergency room and the internal medicine team, especially RN Jamie, who cared for Frank in his last few hours.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Society of Newfoundland and Labrador, or to the SPCA.
Visitation to be held at Cauls Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road, St. John’s, on Wednesday, May 8 from 2-4 and 7-9, with funeral being at Our Lady, Queen of Families Parish, 110 Ashford Drive, Mount Pearl, on Thursday, May 9 at 10:30 and private inurnment to take place Friday, May 10.
We love you forever and always.
“Tis you must go and I must bide
But come ye back when summer’s in the meadow
Or when the valley’s hushed and white with snow
‘Tis I’ll be here in sunshine or in shadow
O Danny boy, O Danny boy, I love you so.”
