Eileen Mary Browne
November 26, 1930 – June 13, 2024
On June 13, 2024, Eileen Mary Browne (née Fleming) passed peacefully away in her own bed, surrounded by her family, just as she wanted. While her birth certificate marks her as 93 years old, she never acted her age, in the best possible way. Always quick as a whip, she loved a good joke, and often carried a stash of them in her purse. She was irreverent, clever, and kind. No one ever, EVER, left her house hungry. She was a joy to be around.
She is pre-deceased by her loving husband Joseph, whom she met as a teenager while working at Hotel Newfoundland. Eileen rather delightedly told her grandchildren once that Joe would stare longingly at her from the dining room he worked in while she operated the elevators. Eileen said she’d have to shoo him back to work so he wouldn’t get in trouble. It’s easy to understand Joe’s predicament though, Eileen possessed the easy charm, charisma, and cheek of Mae West; someone she liked to quote from time to time.
Born in St. John’s, she grew up on McKay Street and never strayed too far from home, always living in town. That’s not to say that Eileen never traveled, her and Joe enjoyed trips to Ireland, England, Florida, and the occasional cruise, and even to visit their daughter in Mt. Pearl, though she didn’t consider it as good as St. John’s. It doesn’t have any pigeons or escalators.
If you ever visited the Sound Centre of the old Canadian Tire on Kenmount Rd, you might have been lucky enough to meet Eileen. If you did, you would remember. She worked there for 25 years, retiring in1990, selling all assortment of gadgets and tech with her usual enthusiasm.
The world’s greatest Nanny, she knew how to spoil her grandchildren and introduced them all to their first vice—cards. She would play it cool, but Eileen was incredibly competitive. You learned the hard way if you were going to win all of Joe’s pocket change, you better hope she called you as her partner in 120s. That winning mentality extended to darts and her leagues. We were all genuinely gripped by Eileen as she’d recount how she “got away” and won the game. That was her gift, she could make the most ordinary “slice of life” tales funny and engaging, because to her, what could be better? She never merely existed, she lived! And boy did she live.
She leaves to mourn, with fond and loving memories, her children David (Mary Ann), Sharon (Philip), Joe (Deirdre), grandchildren Dawn, Anne (Kiedis), Jonathan (Melanie), Erin (Mo), Caiti (Carlos), and great grandchild Lydia. Also leaving to mourn, her brothers Edward, Johnny (Helen), Brian, sister-in-law Blondie (Jim deceased), and a large circle of friends and family, too many to name here. A special thanks to Dr. Malone and Bonnie, along with neighbours Rick and Barb.
While we will always miss our mother, nanny, sister, and friend, we are heartened to know that Joe will be waiting for her as she steps off that elevator one last time, now at the top floor, just as she wanted.
Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road on Sunday, June 16th from 12 noon – 9 p.m. A funeral will be held at 10:30 p.m on Monday, June 17th, at Caul’s Chapel with inurnment immediately following at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery Topsail Road.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that those who wish to express sympathy consider making a donation to the Dr. H. Bliss Murphy Cancer Center.
