Obituary
Dr. James Thomas Ernest Baker, aged 49, of Paradise, NL, passed peacefully away on Thursday, June 13, 2024, in St. John’s, NL after a short illness.
Jamie was born on October 21, 1974, in Carbonear, NL. He was predeceased by his parents, James and Helen (née Power), and was their only son.
Jamie leaves in his wake significant contributions. As a student, he was known for his passion for politics, Newfoundland and Labrador history, and student rights. As a professional, his commitment to supporting settlement activities in the immigration sector culminated in the successful completion of a PhD in Sociology. In his role with the Association for New Canadians, Jamie worked tirelessly to secure the resources to maintain the highest possible quality of service for newcomers. His deep desire for teaching and learning was evidenced through his academic career at Memorial University as a respected lecturer.
Jamie also cherished his pets, whom he mentioned time and time again, cheekily sharing their names with anyone who asked. He will be sincerely missed by his family, professional colleagues and friends alike. Anyone who knew him well appreciated his quips, his humor and his work ethic.
Visitation will be held at Caul’s Funeral Home, LeMarchant Road, on Wednesday, June 19th, 2024 from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m., followed by a Celebration of Life service at Caul’s Chapel at 4:00 p.m. Inurnment of ashes will take place at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Carbonear. Expressions of sympathy in Jamie’s memory may be made to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 23 in Carbonear or to the SPCA.
