Passed away in the home he built with his hands, surrounded by the family he built with his heart.
Devastated but forever grateful for his presence, his wife Doreen (nee Clarke); children Heather, Holly, and Craig (Shelby); siblings Anne (Tom), Gerry, John (Linda), Marie (Rocky), Pat, Jim (Rhonda) and Susan (Chris); sister-in-law Dorothy and brother-in-law Brian, and many nieces and nephews.
Predeceased by his parents, Gerald (Dee) Marshall and Theresa (Fitzgerald), as well as his mother-in-law Evelyn Furey, father-in-law William Clarke.
Brian fiercely loved his wife and best friend, Doreen. They are an example of love personified, looking out for one another and sharing life’s highs and lows, hand in hand. In their 41 years together, 38 of them married, every day they said I love you. They watched movies while holding hands, as is evidenced by the wear marks on the couch. During his last weeks he was very ill and still managed to arrange delivery of a dozen red roses two days before his passing. Remarkable.
He was a very proud father and loved his children unconditionally. He took pride in all their accomplishments but was most proud of their character. He loved sharing adventures with them, and made an adventure out of anything, whether he was dragging them on errands, taking them to museums, or throwing them in the car for spontaneous camping weekends. He taught them much about life and living just by his example. The fact that through childhood, teenage years and into adulthood, Brian was one of their favourite people to hang out with says it all.
Brian was a skilled craftsman, carpenter, and all-around handyman. His workmanship will live on in many homes for years to come.
Brian was also a lover of hockey and the Toronto Maple Leafs. Brian was a founding member of a recreation hockey league more than 40 years ago that’s still going strong today, and his fellow players were like a second family to him. He was able to play his beloved game right up to a month before his passing.
He loved cars and still owned the car he went to kindergarten in, a 1957 Ford Country Squire. With the help of some pretty amazing people, he was in the process of rebuilding it when he passed. It didn’t get finished and that’s okay. He enjoyed the process as much as he did the finished product.
Brian was a member of the Hard of Hearing Association and volunteered many hours with them in various capacities, including board member.
He was also a lover of music and had an encyclopedic memory of artists and their work. You’d be hard pressed to beat Brian in a music or hockey trivia session.
Brian was even-keeled and diplomatic, one of the most patient people on the planet, and a great teacher of anything from carpentry to car repair and maintenance. He accepted people as they were and never judged anyone. He never raised his voice but did often raise one eyebrow.
Those who knew him recognized this as a precursor of a quick verbal jab. His dry humour was legendary. He loved a good pun and caused many eyes to roll with some of them.
They say it takes a village. Brian had a city. He had his immediate and extended family, his Bells Turn family, hockey family, and hard of hearing family. He had many life-long friends, some spanning more than 60 years.
When Brian became ill, so many came forward in love and supported him and his family in so many ways. He often said how blessed he was to be loved by so many wonderful people. There are so many to thank, we have intentionally not named names – the list is much too long. You know who you are, and we are forever grateful for you.
Cremation has taken place. Visitation will take place at his favorite place, his home on 20 Blackberry Crescent, just off Torbay Road on Wednesday, April 10, from 1:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Service will take place at Caul’s Funeral Home on LeMarchant Road at 1:00 p.m. on Friday, April 12, followed by a celebration at his home at 20 Blackberry Cres. And in the end the love you take is equal to the love you make.
