Obituary
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Alonzo ”Peter” Dunne, aged 82, at his home on June 26, 2024. Born in St. John’s, Newfoundland, Peter was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, father in-law, brother, brother-in-law, uncle and friend who touched the lives of many with his warmth, kindness, humor, and witty banter!
Peter was predeceased by his father Alonzo, his mother Mary, his brothers Dr. James Dunne (Patricia), Blaise, and his sister Jane (Mike Power). He was also preceded in death by his father-in-law Clayton and mother-in-law Gwendolyn, who loved Peter like one of their own.
Peter is survived by his devoted wife of 61 years, Ruth (King),with whom he shared a lifetime of love and treasured memories. He was a proud and loving father to Craig (Cathy, Aka Freddy), Andrew (Jane), and Lesley Ann (Eric Furlan) who were his greatest sources of joy and pride. Also leaving to mourn are his grandchildren who he had so much pride in and love for: Catherine, Nathan (Ashley), Claire (Skylar), Ben (Lilly), Molly Jane, Katie, and Caroline. Sisters Dianne (Charlie Daly), Andrea (late Raymond Manning) and Brother Roger, Brother in-law Dr. David King (Renda).
Large circle of nieces and nephews. Special friends and neighbours, Charlie and Darlene Reid, who’s devotion and friendship to helping Ruth and Peter during his illness will never be forgotten and always cherished. A special thank you Dr. Kathie Thoms, Stefan Thoms, Dr. Lisa Goodyear, Shannon Goodyear who were not only good neighbours but great friends.
We would also like to extend a very warm thank you to Dr. Rebecca Rudofsky who cared for Peter with compassion and kindness; who he truly thought the world of. Also a special thank you to Dr. George Fox, Nurse Pam Hunt, and the entire Palliative Care team.
A man of many passions, Peter found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid fisherman, often found by the water’s edge, casting a line and sharing stories. His love for golf brought him many peaceful days on the course, and his skill at cards was matched only by his enjoyment of the game, always played with friends and family. Peter also enjoyed hunting, a pastime that brought him great pleasure, provided many memorable adventures, and days with his friends.
Peter’s life was marked by his generosity, humour, and dedication to those he loved. He will be remembered for his kind heart, his strength, and the countless memories he created with those around him. His spirit will forever live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
Visitation will take place from Caul’s Funeral Home, 84 LeMarchant Road on Wednesday, July 3rd, from 2pm-9pm. A memorial celebration of Peter’s life will be held on July 4th, 2024 at Cauls Chapel, LeMarchant Road at 12:00noon. Cremation has already taken place upon Peter’s wishes. Flowers graciously accepted, or donations may be made in Peter’s memory to The Lung Association – Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter www.lung.ca/donate.
