Today we celebrate mom for the person she was and her devotion and commitment to her family and community.
Mom was born on Black Island and grew up there until teen years when she moved to Moreton’s Harbour to work. There she met her husband to be Dad (Ellwood). It wasn’t long and they went back to Black Island to be married. They were married at her Uncle Elmo and Aunt Margaret’s house. Mom wore a beautiful light blue dress and her Aunt Margaret gave mom a veil. Aunt Margaret said “no bride should be married without a veil”. She started out her married life with 4 step Children and then had 4 children of her own. She was a mother, grandmother, and great grandmother and adored each and every member of the family with all of her heart. She always said that she hated to wash the little angel prints off her coffee tables when the grandchildren left.
Mom was a friend to so many in the community and surrounding area. She often tended to the sick and was always there to lend a hand whenever it was needed. She never hesitated to volunteer to help. You could find mom cleaning the church, preparing food for a community supper, knitting or quilting for someone. My cousin’s wife, Gladys once told me that she would see mom going down the lane with a little bundle under her arm, which was always food for someone that was sick or someone that was new to the area. Everyone was welcome into her kitchen/home with open arms. Hosting people in her home always put a smile on her face.
Mom was one of the founding women who started the Moreton’s Harbour Museum with Margaret Knight. She spent many hours at the museum baking her delicious bread, raisin buns, muffins, making jam, or giving tours and making a “lunch” for visitors. The museum was her passion and she loved to highlight the history of Moreton’s Harbour to the many that came. She was active member of the United Church Women, Women’s Institute and the United Church Official Board committee. Mom loved her flower gardens and took great pride in planting and nurturing all her beautiful flowers.
Most of all, mom loved to laugh and was happiest with a house full of friends and family. The memory of her generosity, warm smile and contagious laugh will help us through the sadness of losing a pillar of both the Small family and the Moretons Harbour community.
A quote from John Steinbeck,
It’s so much darker when a light goes out than it would have been if it had never shone.
Today we release you to sore with the Angels.
