Tobias “Tobe” Abbott Obituary
It is with tremendous sadness and many beautiful memories that the Abbott family announces the peaceful passing of our beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend on Saturday, March 30, 2024.
Tobias (Tobe) Abbott, age 91 years, is predeceased by his parents Fred and Lillian, and brothers Selby, Clifford, Jim and Weldon.
Left with countless cherished memories are his devoted wife of 66 years Susie and loving children Joanne (Peter Leblanc) Abbott, Jennifer (Irving) Abbott and Michael (Allison North) Abbott; precious grandchildren Ashley (Matthew) Whiting, Rhyan (Jennifer) Abbott, Lillian Abbott and Peyton Osmond; great-grandchildren Felicity, Tahlia and Valerie Whiting, and Micah, Jaxon and Eli Abbott; brothers Max (Barbara) and Boyce (Sheila); sisters Joy Foley and Beulah Oakley; sister-in-law Nita Abbott; the Saunders families, and many other extended family and friends.
The Abbott family would like to thank the nurses, doctors and staff of the Health Sciences Centre for your compassion and care.
Tobe was a great story-teller and loved to share his many memories and terrific tales with everyone. He was a quick wit with a joke and a laugh always at the ready. He had a great love for Newfoundland music and could often be found playing his guitar or accordion, or enjoying a game of crib. He was the light of every room – his warm spirit, youthful energy and sparkling eye drawing all near. Tobe was a proud Newfoundlander and made that known to all. He was an avid reader, particularly stories about Newfoundland and ocean mis-adventures. He loved to watch the news, and was attuned to historical and current events.
Tobe had a very fulfilling life, woven of moments both modest and inspiring, as he was himself. His very first job was as a pin-boy in the bowling alley in Gander from which he told many stories. He later moved to Gander Bay as postmaster and wireless operator, where he met Susie and many other lifelong friends. In 1965 he became a lighthouse-keeper on Peckford’s Island, where the family spent many fun filled summers together. Later, the family moved to Labrador City where he worked in the mine, made many friends, and raised his family before returning to live in Musgrave Harbour. His life experiences were endless, and he held the attention of all those around a table when he shared his animated stories.
Tobe was a jack-of-all-trades who loved working and creating with his hands, loved woodworking, carpentry, and metal-working.
Tobe’s greatest love was for his family – his wife, children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren were his entire world.
We will cherish our memories forever, and vow to share his gifts and stories for many more to enjoy.
At the request of Tobe and family, cremation has taken place. A celebration of his life is to be held at a later date.
For now, his family encourages all who knew and loved him to share a tale or two
