Mervin Andrews Obituary
Mervin Andrews passed away peacefully with his family by his side on August 1st at the Health Sciences Centre. He leaves behind Mary, his loving wife of 66 years, his devoted children Kathee (Cam), Keith (Susan) and Karin (Gary), and his siblings Jean and Newman (Marie).
Merv’s greatest love was his family, especially his seven grandchildren, Alyssa (Tommy), Laura (Ryan), Mikaila (Jean), Matthew, Andrew (Hayley), Emily (Liam) and Megan (Michael), and his two great-grandchildren, Fynn and Meadow. For each of them, there was no one more special than Poppa.
Born in Winterton, Trinity Bay, in 1938, Merv earned his Engineering degree at Nova Scotia Tech and became one of the youngest lecturers ever to teach in the engineering department at Memorial University, at the age of 27.
He went on to earn his Master’s in Civil Engineering from the University of Waterloo and returned to St. John’s for a lifelong career of teaching at MUN, where he became Assistant Dean of Engineering.
Merv also held leadership roles within multiple traffic engineering organizations, including serving as Chair of Metro Bus and as a member of the Royal Commission on Regional Government.
Merv’s love of woodworking, chocolate and growing the best tomatoes in Newfoundland were legendary, and his favorite place to be was aboard his sailboat “Special K” with his family and friends on the decks.
The family welcomes visitors and friends to share their memories of Merv at Barrett’s Funeral Home on Wednesday August 7th from 12pm – 3pm. A private service for immediate family to follow.
