Obituary
It is with great sorrow that we announce the peaceful passing of Alice Maude Janes (nee Blackwood) at Glennbrook Lodge on November 21, 2023 at 92 years of age.
Maude was predeceased by her husband of 49 years, Clarence Janes; her parents Abner and Hilda (Stokes) Blackwood; six brothers and their spouses: Peter (Edwina), Gus (Cherry), Joe (Alma), Leaze (Evelyn), Bob (Syretha), and Ross (Gertie); two sisters and their spouses: Stella (Ron Roberts) and Neta (Phillip Burry); and grand daughter-in-law, Wanda Richards.
Left to mourn with cherished memories her only child, Eileen and son-in-law Jerry Riche; four grandchildren: Steven, Laura, Erin (Michael Foley) and Matthew (Lauren Mina); two beloved great-grandchildren Christopher and Rowen Foley. She also leaves her one remaining sister, Sadie Barefoot (Carl, deceased) and sister-in-law, Elanor Blackwood, who resides in Nova Scotia.
Maude leaves a large number of nieces and nephews and extended family members across the globe. There are too many to mention by name, but all were very special.
Among her favourite activities was sharing a meal with the family and watching the after-dinner antics of the great-grandchildren during a family pub quiz organized by Uncle Steven. She loved a game of cards and berry picking at her cabin in Port Nelson, Bonavista North.
Having lived to the age of 92, Maude lost many dear friends along the way. Her one surviving “card buddy”, Lillian Sturge, visited her at Glennbrook and she cherished those visits as she did all the visits by family and friends.
Eileen and the family wish to thank every member of the staff at Gennbrook Lodge for the excellent care and compassion they extend to all the residents. The kindness you showed Maude over the last 15 months will never be forgotten. God bless you all.
Maude will be resting at Barrett’s Funeral Home on 328 Hamilton Avenue St. John’s on Sunday November 26, 2023 from
6 – 9pm. Funeral will take place in Barrett’s Chapel 328 Hamilton Avenue at 2pm with burial to follow at Mount Pleasant.
If you would like to honor Maude’s memory, please make a donation to The Gathering Place, a charity of your choice, or provide a meal to one on our streets who need our help.
