Paul Theodore Dunn, Jr. – age 94 of Knoxville, TN passed away on Tuesday, December 19, 2023. Paul was born in Providence, RI on February 19, 1929 and grew up during the Great Depression. Upon graduation from Westerly High School, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy where he served his country from 1946-48. Upon his return, he took advantage of the GI Bill and graduated from Providence College. He went on to graduate from Catholic University of America Law School in Washington, DC. While in Washington DC, he met Mary Agnes Kuster, and they were married on September 8, 1956. They began their life together built on a strong faith which permeated their marriage and was passed down through four generations.
Paul took a job with The Panama Canal Company in the Canal Zone where their first three children were born. In 1962 he took a job with TVA in Knoxville, and thus began the Dunn family involvement with Holy Ghost Catholic Church, St. Joseph School, and KCHS. He was a member of Holy Ghost Catholic Church since 1962. Paul was a founding member of TN Right to Life. He spent countless hours advocating for unborn babies, as well as, a general respect for all human life.
In 1971 he purchased some acreage in Claiborne County that became known as “The Property.” It was a place where Paul showed his children, grandchildren, and their friends the beauty of God’s creation. He also taught them the value of hard work, dependability, and problem solving with a little bit of fun thrown in. He was a man of wide interests from beekeeping to being an avid reader in both English and Spanish, raising blueberries, as well as, a walking encyclopedia of knowledge. You may have a statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary or a bluebird box in your yard that were crafted by his skilled hands. His greatest joys in life were his Faith and family. May he rest in peace!
Preceded in death by parents, Paul T. Dunn, Sr. and Ann O’Rourke Dunn; brothers, John Dunn and Joseph Dunn; and son, Paul T. Dunn III.
Survived by wife of 67 years, Mary Kuster Dunn; children, Rita (Mark) Cook, Sarah Dunn, Bill (Stacy) Dunn, Frank (Christy) Dunn, David (Diannah) Dunn, Gina (Scott) Martin, Rebecca Bush, and Peter (Susannah) Dunn; 23 grandchildren; 21 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends 5:00-7:00 PM on Friday, December 22, 2023, at Bridges Funeral Home followed by the Rosary. The Funeral Mass will be 11:00 AM on Saturday at Holy Ghost Catholic Church followed by a procession to Lynnhurst Cemetery for the interment. Pallbearers: Bill Dunn, Frank Dunn, David Dunn, Sr., Peter Dunn, Mark Cook, and Scott Martin. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Holy Ghost Catholic Church, 111 Hinton Street, Knoxville, TN 37917, TN Right to Life, PO Box 5218, Knoxville, TN 37928, or St. Joseph School, 1810 Howard Drive, Knoxville, TN 37918.
