Joseph Dobbin Obituary
It is with deep sadness that we announce that our father, Joseph Aloysius Dobbin of St. Joseph’s, St. Mary’s Bay, peacefully passed away on May 28, 2024 the age of 85 while residing at Chancellor Park Long-Term Care Home. Joseph is predeceased by his wife Anna (Linehan), son Sean and parents: Ellen (Norris) and Thomas. He leaves to mourn his daughters: Joann (Sam) and Rose (Chris), grandchildren: Kayla (Ryan), Samantha, Rebecca, Sarah and Ethan, great grandchildren: Wesley and Aubree, sister, Mary (John Hickey), daughter-in-law Brittany, sisters in-law: Margaret (Thomas Ryan d.) and Marie (James Linehan d.), nieces and nephews: Keith, Todd, Craig, Fred, Peter, Neil, Billy, Kenny, Allison, Billy, Harold, Wayne, Michelle, Alex, James, Glenn, Yvonne, Fergus, Colleen, Marilyn, Karen, Sharon, Tom, Joe, Denis and Lisa, as well as a many cousins of the Dobbin and Norris families, not the least of which include the Companion and Park families of Corner Brook, former students (which are innumerable) and dear friends, especially Karen Hanlon.
Dad will be remembered as a lover of local history, of story and of song. Some of his happiest moments were in front of a crowd performing a recitation or a traditional song. He leaves behind two volumes of history of Salmonier Arm and her people for us to cherish, and well as the many Christmas reminiscences he would send to friends and family. He will also be remembered for his commitment to the life of former St. Joseph’s Parish, and Good Shepherd Parish – that commitment, from parish committee work to lay-liturgist, stemmed from a deep and abiding faith in God that permeated all aspects of his life.
We wish to gratefully acknowledge that, without the kindness of the residents of St. Joseph’s and surrounding communities, Dad would have had to move out of his precious Salmonier much sooner than he did. We know many people regularly had him in for supper or brought him meals. We know many people visited him in St. Joseph’s and tried to comfort him in his grief over first, Anna’s passing, and then Sean’s. We cannot name you all for fear of accidentally leaving someone out, but we know who you are and love you for it. We do however have to acknowledge the neighbours on Norris’ Hill, friends a lifetime, and even more so to Dad these last years. Thank you to those who regularly visited Dad at Chancellor Park especially Rick & Rudy Singleton, for your ministry to the sick, and Lucilla and Sylvester Yetman. Many blessings also to Ralph and Madonna Critch and their family. Thank you to the staff of Chancellor Park and Dr. O’Shea for your care of Dad these last few months.
Visitation will take place at the Father Enright Memorial Chapel, St. Joseph’s, SMB on Friday, May 31, 2024 from 1:00 pm – 8:00 pm. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Good Shepherd Parish, St. Joseph’s on Saturday, June 1, 2024 at 1:00 pm with interment to follow at St. Joseph’s Cemetery.
Dad loved flowers, so we accept them gratefully. If friends so desire, donations in Dad’s memory may be made to Good Shepherd Parish.
Dad will be at rest now ‘til salem e himlen’ with Mom and Sean, in sure and certain hope of the Resurrection.
