It is with sadness that the families of the late Gordon Alex Butt announce his passing at the Green Bay Community Health Care Centre, Springdale, NL aged 88 years.
Gordon leaves to mourn with loving memories his children, Rhonda Bennett, Brian (Cynthia) Butt, Susann (Douglas) Legge, & Jim Butt; grandchildren, Susan, Sabrina, Alec (Pops’ special boy), Jay, Holly, Jazmyne, Dustin, & Jace; great-grandchildren, Clinton, Susanna, Alexander, Matthew, Mataya, Blake, Jaelyn, & Kayson; sister, Glenda (Sam) Snow; brother-in-law, Jesse (Clarice) Coish; sisters-in-law, Norma (Neil) Bridger, Jesse Coish, & June Coish; beloved friends, Marie Heath, Jeanette and Dean Weir, Everette & Brenda Butt, & Major Gerald Lacey; as well as a large circle of nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Gordon is predeceased by his wife, Phyllis; son, Dwayne; granddaughter, Victoria Legge; parents, Phillip & Sadie Butt; parents-in-law, Clayton & Lucy Coish; brother, Walter; sister, Grace Noel; sisters-in-law, Evelyn Janes, Pearly (Guy) Bailey & Shirley Butt; brothers-in-law, Milton Coish, Wesley Coish, & Hugh Noel.
Gordon was born in Corner Brook, NL, but as a pastor’s kid, called many places his home throughout his childhood, making friends everywhere he lived. On November 28, 1960 he married Phyllis and started a family and together, lived in Stephenville, Goose Bay and then Deer Lake for 45 years. Gordon was a respected colleague throughout his career and retired from Deer Lake Airport Fire Officer position in 1992. In 2018 both Gordon and Phyllis moved to Springdale, NL and added another beautiful chapter to their lives. Gordon enjoyed many adventures and making great memories with family and friends while flying his airplane, out on the ocean in boat, hunting, trapping, playing hockey, hiking anything outdoors, playing guitar and singing. Gordon was a quiet, kind and loving man who enjoyed life to the fullest and was known to have a servant’s heart. He was also known to be compassionate, reliable, and always willing to help, earning the respect and love of all who knew him.
The family would like to extend special thanks to the health care staff in Green Bay Health Centre, Springdale, NL who cared for Dad as if he was their own family; and all the wonderful friends and family who visited and supported us throughout his illness.
In keeping with his wishes cremation has taken place.
The public visitation will take place at Parsons Funeral Home, 63 North Main Street, Deer Lake, NL on Wednesday, May 15, 2024 at 7:00 PM- 9:00 PM; and Thursday, May 16, 2024 at 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM from Green Bay Funeral Home, 145 Cpl. S. Bouzane Blvd, Springdale, NL.
The funeral service will take place, Friday, May 17, 2024 at 2:00 PM from The Salvation Army Citadel, Springdale, NL, with Majors Josh & Pauline Randell officiating.
Gordon was both pragmatic and charitable, so in lieu of flowers, donations in his memory may be made to the Victoria Legge Award for Spiritual Leadership – Memorial University; The Make a Wish Foundation; or a charity of one’s choice.
