Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Lillian Violet (Colbourne) Richards on October 22, 2023 at Western Memorial Hospital in Corner Brook. She was in her 87th year.
She leaves to mourn her three children, Robert (Daphne), Peter (Linda) and Rhonda (John); grandchildren, Lori, Charmayne, Matthew, Megan, Robert, Jonathan; and several great grandchildren. She is predeceased by her husband, Leslie; and parents, Effie (Green) Colbourne and Thomas Colbourne.
Violet was born in Little Brehat on the Great Northern Peninsula to a large family of nine children. As the last surviving member, her passing leaves a void with respect to our family history. Fortunately, Violet loved to tell stories and share her knowledge of her ancestry with her children, nieces, and nephews. Her wisdom will carry on through all of us.
Violet loved Little Brehat and returned every summer she was able to- a tradition continued by her children. While her roots were deeply grounded in Newfoundland, Violet took every opportunity to travel to far off destinations around the world, such as Zimbabwe, South Africa, Dubai, Oman, and parts of Europe. She thoroughly enjoyed meeting the people of the countries she visited and learning about their history and culture.
She was an avid walker and berry picker; and she loved cross-country skiing and “racket walking” as she called it. Violet was instrumental in setting up the 50+ Club and Walking Club in St. Anthony and often travelled as a representative and advocate for seniors in her area. She was a fabulous cook and could turn her hand to just about anything: knitting, crocheting, sewing, and weaving.
Always with a book in hand, Violet would end each evening reading her cherished bible. She was devoted to her church, friends, and family, and will be missed by all who knew her.
Cremation has taken places as per Violet’s wishes and a celebration of life will take place at a later date.
