Obituary
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Joe Callahan announce his peaceful passing at the Corner Brook Palliative Care Unit on Sunday, November 26th , 2023. He leaves to mourn his wife of 61 years: Marion Rae Callahan; his three children: Cynthia (Carol), Peter (Veronica), and David (Jodi); his three grandchildren: Olivia, Grace, and Harry; and two step-grandchildren: Haley and Mitchel; as well as other close relatives (Cousin Genevieve Dale and Sister-in-law Dallas Brake) and close friends.
Joe is predeceased by his mother Rhoda (Bailey) Callahan, and his father Henry (Harry) Callahan.
After Graduating from the St. John’s High School, the Model School, Joe found his calling at Bowaters/Corner Brook Pulp and Paper as a Millwright. Being quick to spot safety concerns and prompt to make repairs, brought promotion in his work as “Safety Joe” which carried into all aspects of his life. He was a real handy man with a true passion for wood turning, woodworking, and metalwork including knives.
Joe was happiest enjoying the outdoors, including canoeing and snowmobiling. He was involved in all aspects of archery – competing, coaching, and constructing bows and gear. He revelled in years of backcountry and cross-country skiing and trail construction honored with the “Callahan Trail” namesake. Joe regularly wet a line on the Lower Humber as a source of solace with a preference for trout. Camping and hunting were other ways to find grounding in the great outdoors with a close-knit group of regulars, bringing back many a slideshow of the successful trip.
At his request, cremation has taken place with interment to be announced at a later date. As expressions of sympathy, flowers are graciously accepted and may be sent to Rae Callahan at the Lohnes Complex or a donation can be made in Joe’s memory to the Blow Me Down Cross-Country Ski Club.
The family wishes to extend a very special thank you to the caring staff at the Lohnes Complex, the nurses and doctors at the Long Term Care Facility and the Palliative Care Unit, and Joe’s family doctor who all took excellent care of Joe.
