Obituary
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Alva Woolfrey on Friday December 8, at Western Memorial Regional Hospital.
Alva lived a full and active life, earmarked by his love for his family and friends. Alva was predeceased by his beloved wife Lucy nee Dalley, and his parents Herbert Hooper Woolfrey and Blanche Woolfrey. He is predeceased by his only brother Charlie who died as a teenager but forever held dear. He was also predeceased by his special friend of many years, Gertie Targett.
Leaving to lovingly honour his life and memory are his children Nada Rowsell (Gary), Linda Pennell (Dave), Jerry (Debbie), Dennis (Karen), Nola Murphy (Paul), and Brian (Connie). Grandchildren Todd Pennell (Sharlene), Jay Rowsell (Miranda), Andrea Chin (Leslie), Marc Rowsell (Geoff), Brad Woolfrey (Jamie Lee), Adam Murphy (Megan), Ryan Woolfrey (Liem), Erika Squires (Robbie), Jordan Murphy (Nicole), Claire Woolfrey (Austin), and Scott Woolfrey. Great Grandchildren Quinn, Lacy, Kaitlyn, Brody, Ryder, Kylan, Marlie, Nathan, Noah, and Ellie.
Alva was born in Lewisporte and grew up in a farming family, enjoying life with horses and raising animals and growing crops. He met and married Lucy Dalley of Twillingate and went on to begin work with the Canadian National Railway in 1950 as an engine watchman, then on to trainman in 1955 when there were steam locomotives. He was promoted to conductor in 1961 and moved his family to Corner Brook in 1966 where he would work with the Railway until 1986.
It was in Corner Brook where Alva and Lucy raised their six children. He was very supportive of any activities and sports in which the children were involved. He was an active member of the old East Side Sports Club and the Humber Hawks. He spent time coaching hockey and playing softball with the railway crew.
Alva enjoyed hockey and followed all the boys through the sport he loved. He is still fondly remembered by the those who played back then as a fixture behind the screen in the corner at the Humber Gardens puffing on his pipe. The Humbermouth kids remember the van loads he carried to hockey for years, never any trouble and he took it on to get them all there. Alva continued to follow hockey through to his grandkids even making road trips which he dearly loved.
He was a gentle man and a gentleman and for that, so many who have come in contact with him remember him so fondly. His own passions were salmon fishing, hunting and skidooing with his children and grandchildren, who all spent time with him and Lucy at the cabin in Little Bonne Bay. Memories of them both that are so very dear to the entire family.
Family was important, and although he grew up in a small family, embraced the large Dalley family into which he married, and his memories of having his kids grow up in this large extended family always remained near and dear to his heart.
Later in life his love of dancing took off. He loved the senior’s dances and the dances at the Corner Brook Hotel. He enjoyed getting out and socializing, and the time he spent with his special friend Gertie and the Targett family. He learned how to use a laptop in his late 70s and “mastered” social media with much family IT support. He could always be found with his loyal dog Bud.
The last few years there has been some illness. He moved to Western Long Term Care a year ago. The family want to thank the staff who cared for him medically but also showed they cared for him as a person. He had charm and spirit and showed it. He passed peacefully with his family by his side.
In Alva’s memory flowers are graciously accepted or donations to the Humber United Church.
Public visitation will take place at Country Haven Funeral Home on Tuesday, December 12th from 7-9 pm. It will be followed by a private family funeral service at the Country Haven Funeral home chapel on Wednesday, December 13th at 11:00 am where it will be live streamed on Country Haven Funeral Home’s Facebook page for others to view.
