Obituary of Marie Power
It is with broken hearts we announce the passing of Marie Power (Furey)RN at St. Clare’s Hospital on December 25, 2024, surrounded by loved ones.
Mom was born at St. Clare’s Hospital in St. John’s to Wilbur and Christine Furey (Shanahan) on June 7, 1939. She went to school in Avondale until she was 8 years old, then moved to Holyrood, when Nan and Pop started Furey’s Bus (Fleetline Bus) and Furey’s Hotel. At age 13, Mom attended. Bride’s College at Littledale in St. John’s. She graduated high school at the tender age of 15. She took music lessons while in school and excelled on the piano. Upon graduation, she completed 1 year of business studies at St. FX university in Antigonish, Nova Scotia. After she completed her first year at university, she returned home and at the age of 16, taught Grades 3 and 4 at Holy Cross School in Holyrood. After school each day, she taught music for 50 cents a lesson. For the families that couldn’t afford the fee, Mom taught them for free.
At the age of 17, Mom’s love for the nursing profession started as she was accepted into the St Clare’s Mercy Hospital School of nursing. Mom and her 13 classmates graduated in 1960, where she was the class valedictorian. For the next 36 years, Mom worked at St Clare’s hospital, then as the Public Health Nurse for the Conception Bay Center area (Holyrood to Colliers) until her retirement in 1996. She was a kind, capable and compassionate nurse. We were so proud to be the kids of “Nurse Power”.
Dad the townie came around the shores of Holyrood as his parents owned a cabin in Holyrood, the current site of the yacht club. Mom and Dad were married on June 1, 1963. and celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary with family and friends last summer.
Mom was community first with everything she did. She was a volunteer with various organizations including:
Local Education Committee
Guide with the Holyrood Brownies
Founder and President of the Holyrood branch of the Canadian Red Cross
Holy Cross Parish Council
Heart and Stroke Foundation
Organist for the Holy Cross Choir
Emergency Response Committee
Holyrood Bereavement Committee
Both Mom and Dad loved being members and volunteering at the Star of the Sea Association, and in 2003, Mom received their Executive Award.
In 2012, Mom was presented with the Governor General’s Award – Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Medal, for her many years of volunteerism.
Mom and Dad loved Holyrood and lived there until 2016, when they moved to their condo in St. John’s to have easier accessibility to hospitals for Dad.
