Lewis Wheaton has gone to that eternal hunting, fishing and berry picking land of the world beyond this world. Lewis died peacefully in his sleep after a short time of declining health.
His loving wife of 60 years, Julia (Cave), and their children Roxie Wheaton (Joseph Hudon), Myron Wheaton, Andrea Wheaton (Peter Michalski) & Kelly Rodway (Keith) are deeply grieving his death as they also give thanks for his long and loving life. His grandchildren Dylan Wheaton (Kaitlyn Chippett), Pierson Michalski and Julianne Wheaton will treasure so many fun memories of their Pop. In addition to being missed by lots and lots of good friends from Newfoundland, the US and Canada, he will be remembered by his brother Herbert (Mary Ann) and a very large circle of nieces, nephews, cousins and in-laws. Lewis was predeceased by his parents; Alexander and Jessie May Wheaton and his siblings; Newton, Jose, Brett, Marie, Gerald, Carl, Heber and Mary.
Lewis was born and raised in Frederickton, NL and lived there until his move to the Nightingale Manor, Gander in 2020. None of us ever imagined that Lewis would have willingly left his home in Frederickton, but he gladly moved to support his wife’s health. He did have four requirements for life in his new home: an orange every morning, an endless supply of cinnamon toast crunch cereal, access to partridgeberry jam, and a promise that when he died, we would make sure he got home to Frederickton.
Lewis made his living working on the production line at the Purity factory in St. John’s, in lumber camps, as an inshore fisherman, as a guide for Americans and Canadians hunting moose and caribou, as a field guide for the Provincial Department of Mines and Energy, and as a cargo expeditor with Federal Commerce and Navigation on supply boats to the most northern reaches of Canada. In his spare time, with Julia he grew a vegetable and fruit garden like no other. He went on berry picking adventures with Julia, friends and family. He read and re-read so many books of non-fiction – with only a grade 6 education. He loved to have a good chat – telling stories and asking questions – whether with complete strangers, friends or family. He thought Newfoundland was the best place to live but also loved to learn about the parts of the world he would never get to explore. Lastly, let’s not forget the third hand – his unique fork! Countless plates of food were approached and devoured with it, for Lewis loved to eat – especially a big breakfast!
The family are so very grateful to the staff of Dr. Hugh Twomey Health Care Center, Botwood for making his final day a lovely reunion with Julia. How wonderful that they were again under the same roof for his last breath. He had longed to leave the hospital to go home to Julia. The family are also grateful to the Nightingale Manor, Rev. Stephen Matthews and visitor Bonnie Adams of Fraser Road United Church.
If you wish, memorial donations in honour of Lewis can be made to the Frederickton United Church Cemetery Fund or to the Burton Avenue United Church, Barrie for the Breakfast Program Fund.
Visitation will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 25 from 1:00 – 4:00 pm at Stacey’s Funeral Home in Gander. A funeral service will be held at Frederickton United Church on Thursday, Oct. 26 at 1:00 p.m. with interment immediately following at the New United Church Cemetery, Frederickton.
Arrangements entrusted through Stacey’s Funeral Home, Gander – Carmanville.
