DUNPHY
Joseph “Joe”
March 23, 1934 – October 15, 2024
It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Joseph “Joe” Dunphy on October 15, 2024, at the age of 90 after a brief illness. Joe was born on Red Island, Placentia Bay on March 23, 1934, to Thomas and Anastasia Dunphy, who predeceased him. Joe was also predeceased by his siblings Mary (Lamb), Patrick and Cam.
Joe met the love of his life, Alrita White, in 1955. Together they formed an incredible partnership that endured a lifetime. They were married for 67 years and raised their family in Buchans, Deer Lake and Gander. Joe was known for his steadfast dependability, organization, intelligence, attention to detail as well as his unwavering love and support for his family and community. Always ready to lend a hand, he and Alrita worked together, alongside many other volunteers when thousands of passengers were stranded in Gander on 9/11. He was also a dedicated Masonic Lodge member, Shriner, and previously a member of the Rotary Club and Lions Club.
Joe graduated from trades school electrical program in 1952. He started his career with Newfoundland Light and Power where he worked 2 years and then worked for 36 more years with Canadian National Telecommunications and it’s successors Terra Nova Telecommunications and the Newfoundland Telephone Company. After retiring, along with his work at the Masonic Lodge, Joe enjoyed many trips to the Eagle River salmon fishing, as well as many treks to various locations in pursuit of moose with his son, son in law and friends. He was an avid fan of curling and had a keen interest in news and current events. He embraced technological changes and learned to use a computer at the tender age of 72 and switched from an android to apple cell phone at the age of 84 with amazing dexterity. He had just recently mastered the use of his new iPad he received for his 90th birthday that was well used for Facetime calls with family residing away.
Joe is survived by: his beloved wife Alrita (nee White) of Gander: his children, Donna Scott (Charlie) Orleans, ON, Derek Dunphy (Lisa Byrne), St. John’s, Darlene Dunphy-Skinner (Doug), Grand Falls-Windsor, and Deanne Pittman (Scott), Massey Drive: grandchildren Steven Scott, Stephanie Scott (Craig Cunningham), Danielle Reid (Jeremy), Deidre Skinner (Matthew Pittman), Allison Pittman (Brandon Crewe), Ryan Pittman, Ryan Clarke (Tiffiney), Laurissa Clarke and Erica Clarke Whalen (Wes), and great grandchildren Lincoln, Emily, Alex and Grayson, as well as many nieces and nephews.
Special thanks to the staff of the surgical ward at James Paton Memorial Hospital for their excellent care and compassion in his final days. Also thanks to Joe’s wonderful neighbours on Kent Place. Your kindness is very much appreciated.
