With profound gratitude for a life well lived, we celebrate Ralph Cecil Roberts, our father and patriarch, who
passed away peacefully on Monday, February 5, 2024. Well into his 95th year, he leaves behind a tapestry of
cherished memories, a testament to his resilience, kindness, and unwavering faith.
Predeceased by parents Jennie (Gushue) and Frederick Roberts, as well as brothers and sisters-in-law:
Graham (Irma) and Tim (Merle); parents-in-law, Elizabeth (Whalen) and William Spracklin; brothers-in-law,
Cecil Spracklin and Vernon Taylor; and nephew, Blaine Taylor.
His memory will endure in the hearts of his loving wife, Pearl (Spracklin), children: Rosalind (Roy) Dawe; Derek
(Daphne), Roxanne (Gary)Skanes, and Keith (Genny); grandchildren: Andrea (Kenneth), Heather (Stephen),
and Jessica (Kendan); great grandchildren: Briar, Max, and Kasey; as well as a large circle of extended family
and close friends.
Ralph was born in Brigus and married his childhood sweetheart, Pearl, who became his wife of 71 years.
Together they raised their 4 children in a home where laughter echoed through the halls and doors were
always open to friends and family alike.
While Ralph’s career started at Dick’s and Co. and Canada Packers, he became Manager of Brigus Knitting
Mills and upon its closure became Regional Manager for NL Housing Corp. from which he retired in 1989.
Ralph came to reside in St. John’s, Marystown, Gander, Grand Falls, and Cupids before settling in at Heritage
Retirement Centre, C.B.S. Throughout his busy life, he came to acquire a wealth of friendships that he
cherished.
Ralph offered his talents as church organist, choir director, lay reader, and chaired many boards. He was the
first lay person elected as President of the NL Conference of the UC of Canada. Ralph was a former Grand
Master of the Grand Black Chapter of Canada, Past Grand Master of the Orange Lodge of NL, the first Grand
Master of the Orange Young Britons, as well as a Past Grand Chaplain of the Orange Lodge of Canada. He
remained a faithful member of his local lodge and church communities. While he was always firm in his
convictions, he was also a softy at heart.
He loved hosting company, traveling, camping, playing cards, puzzles, and computers, yet was often found
enjoying solitude on the hills, blueberry picking. While Ralph had a keen interest in local genealogy research,
he was well known and often called upon for the knowledge and information he collected in this area.
A special thank you to the staff of Heritage Square Retirement Living for their incredible compassion and care
over the past 4 years. Ralph spoke fondly of them all as his second family.
As we bid farewell to this extraordinary soul, let us remember Ralph not only for the sorrow of parting but also
the joy of having shared in his remarkable journey.
Cremation has taken place. The family will receive visitors at Broughton’s Funeral Home, Brigus, Friday,
February 16, from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 – 9:00 p.m. Funeral service to take place at Cupids United Church,
