Memorial Donation
John ‘Jack’ McHugh was born in Marysvale on February 28,1935.
Dad passed peacefully through Heaven’s Gates on January 24, 2024 to join his parents Vincent and Mary McHugh, parents-in-law Arthur and Sarah Walker, sister Anastasia McLean, niece Mary Dalton, and nephew Michael Bartlett.
He leaves behind with broken hearts and a lifetime of memories, his wife of nearly 60 years Margaret McHugh (née Walker); his sister Agnes Bartlett; his children Gerard, Chris (Brenda), Jacquie (Bert), Karl, Vince (Melanie), Art, Mark (Ruby) and Anastasia (Kent); grandchildren Amanda (Derek), Jesse, Rachel (Sheldon), Sarah (Justin), Mark (Wissal), Jillian (Jeffery), Christie (Jessica), Kirsten (Drake), Hannah, Evan (Jillian), Griffin (Brooke), Jack, Walker, Noah; great-grandchildren Will, Niamh, Austin, Harper, and Jasper, as well as many other relatives and friends.
The family is eternally grateful for the outpouring of love and support from our family and friends. Pop was a fine hand at a game of cards, enjoyed watching wrestling, and loved to be out in the woods. He loved having children around, slipping them a few dollars for some candy or sharing his sweets. He had a gruff exterior but was kind and gentle on the inside.
Dad’s final years were brightened by visits from his family, especially his sons Mark and Karl, who went above and beyond to ensure he was always comfortable and knew how much he was loved. A very special thank you to the extraordinary team of people who helped during his time in long-term care, especially the wonderfully caring staff of 3 South at the Josiah Squibb Memorial Pavilion in Carbonear (and prior to that, the Pentecostal Senior Citizen’s Home in South River).
Visitation will be at Broughton’s Funeral Home, 17 Station Road, Brigus on Saturday, January 27 from 1-5pm and Sunday, January 28 from 10am-9pm.
Mass of Christian burial will take place at Our Lady of the Snows Catholic Church, Marysvale, NL, at 1:00pm on Monday, January 29, 2024. Burial to follow at St. Patrick’s Roman Catholic Cemetery, Brigus.
Flowers are gratefully accepted, or a donation in his memory can be made to the Alzheimer’s Society or any charity of one’s choice. We invite you to show your love by sharing your favorite memory of Dad and Pop by having a chat with an old or a new friend, just like he liked to do.
