Verna May Keel (Fisher)
1932-2024
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Verna Keel at the age of 91 years at the Bonavista Hospital on Wednesday, August 21, 2024. Having lived a very active life, Verna spent many years working in their family business, Edwin Keel’s Dry Goods and Groceries, volunteering with the Red Cross, and was a member of the Happy Sight Rebecca Lodge . In earlier years, camping was a big part of her life with Ed and their family and friends. In recent years, Verna never missed out on any of the activities taking place at the Bonavista Retirement Home where she resided for the past two years. Going for a drive to appreciate the scenery was another favourite pastime of Verna’s. Everyone who knew Verna could not help but notice her sharp mind, her impeccable grooming and her love for her family, especially her three grandsons and four great grand-children, of whom she was so proud.
While she enjoyed gardening, knitting, quilting, playing Checkers and Skip-Bo, reading her Bible and daily devotions were of utmost importance to her. She loved attending church and her church family.
Verna will be sadly missed by her son Wayne and his wife Bonnie, who was like a daughter to her and their son Mark (Stephanie) and their son Nathaniel.
She also leaves to mourn her son in law, Kenneth Durdle ( Dianne) and his children, Curtis (Allison) and Dion (Natalie) and their children; Sienna, Lewis and Darcy. Also, leaving to mourn is her brother Ray (Linda), sister Doreen, nephew Dennis Hicks (Kim) and a large circle of nieces, nephews and friends.
Predeceased by her husband Edwin and daughter Madonna (Durdle), sister Edith Hicks (Earl) and their sons Eddie, Gary and Glenn and sister Millicent Mercer. Visitation will take place at Strathie’s Funeral Home on Friday, August 23 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM and Saturday, August 24 from 2-4 PM and 7-9 PM. The funeral service will be held Sunday, August 25th at Memorial United Church, Bonavista at 2:30 PM.
The family would like to say a very sincere thank you to the staff of the Bonavista Retirement home, and the Bonavista Hospital staff for their kindness and compassion.
As expressions of sympathy, flowers will be graciously accepted or donations to the Bonavista and Area Cancer Relay in aid of Daffodil Place.
“And I’ve got so much to thank Him for. So much to praise Him for, you see, He’s been so good to me. When I think of what He’s done, and where He’s brought me from, I’ve got so much to thank Him for.”
