March 5th, 1948 – February 14th, 2024
It is with great sadness that the family of the late Gerald Russell of Catalina, NL, announce his passing at Bonavista Penninsula Health Centre, aged 75 years.
Predeceased by parents Ruby and Simeon Russell, sister Evelyn Russell, grandson Coady Butt.
Gerald leaves to mourn wife, Myrtle (Stagg), of 56 years, his children, Joanne Butt (David), Terry (Angela), Scott (Alison), grandchildren, Kayla (Andrew), Justin, Chantel, Logan, Nicole, Riley, Jessica, Nathan. Great grandchildren, Isabella, Katelynn, Caleb, Hunter, Winter.
Gerald grew up in Port Union and met his life long partner Myrtle Stagg at the age of 15. They married and were blessed with three children.
Gerald attended the College of Trades and Technology in St John’s, in which he received his diploma in Stationary Engineering. They then moved to Grand Falls where Gerald started his career at Central NL Hospital, and shortly thereafter started work at the paper mill where he later retired.
Gerald worked at the steam plant in the mill where he met and became good friends with Reg Butt with whom they shared many laughs, drinks, and stories. Many other coworkers were his good buddies as well, as he made friends easily.
Outside of work, Gerald also made many memories with Madonna and Hedley Anthony.
Camping was a thrill for the entire family each summer at Square Pond, along with other family members with their children.
Moose hunting was a passion of Geralds…. many planned trips with nephews Georgie and Derrick in Grand Falls, sometimes accompanied by Reg and other buddies, some visiting from Little Catalina. Then moose hunting trips continued to the Catalina area with his great buddy Mont Stagg.
Gerald and wife Myrtle moved back to Catalina in 2009 where he made many more friends, enjoyed his card games, and coffees with buddies at the coffee shop.
Gerald had other passions such as camping at Princeton Pond in later years, this time with grandchildren in tow.
Gerald was also a lover of Salmon fishing, trouting, berry picking, and tending to his vegetable garden (both Grand Falls and Catalina)
Gerald will be missed by all who knew him!
