It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of William J. Kent on August 13, 2024.
Bill, Uncle Bill, Billy, Pop, Dad was born March 11, 1946 to John Kent and Harriet Taylor and spent his early years in St. Catherine’s, St. Mary’s Bay, along the Salmonier River. A special place in his heart to the very end.
With a strong affinity to cars, Bill could sometimes be found driving the Salmonier Line by the time he was 12. A couple cushions on the seat, then he was off chauffeuring locals between the taverns of Colinet to Mt. Carmel, and beyond.
In his teens, the family moved to Carbonear where he eventually became a Red Seal Ticketed Electrician, helping bring IBEW to Newfoundland, of which he was a dedicated member of Local 2330 for 41 years. He met and married Norah Dwyer, raised a family, and indulged in his many hobbies like hunting, fishing, and anything auto.
When coaxed into telling a story, he combined the right amount of truth and embellishment to make the story memorable. He could easily frighten us with a ghost story as much as he could make us laugh at a moose hunt gone wrong.
A man who kept his cards close to his chest, he revealed how at one point the 26 pound salmon he caught on the flats of the Salmonier River was the 2nd largest ever…how was it caught? Well, we will never know.
Bill knew a lot of people and had many friends through leisure and work. He really enjoyed his buddies during their weekly Ticket Day in the shed and later the Coffee Crew at McDonald’s.
We hope those reading this take a moment and enjoy a memory of him.
The family would like to thank the dedicated staff of the Dialysis Unit of the Carbonear Hospital for their professionalism and kindness during Bill’s treatments over the past 7 years. You are the best.
