Obituary
Robert passed away on October 27th, 2023, at the age of 80, surrounded by the love of his family. He will be sadly missed by his loving wife of 59 years, Joyce (nee Cooper), daughter, Terri, son-in-law, Glenn Parsons, and son, Craig. Robert will also be greatly missed by his sister Carol (Wayne) Gibson, his brother Alex (Maureen), their families as well as many relatives and close friends.
Robert was born in Saltcoats on September 5th, 1943, the eldest son of Isabel, (Bradford) and Jack Morgan. He grew up on the family farm, in the Castleton District. His Grandparents Charles and Rhoda lived on the same farmyard and Grandpa was a great influence on Robert’s life. Grandpa always was busy “with projects”, and as a boy Robert followed his every step. He was a loving son to his parents and devoted “big brother” to Carol and Alex.
Robert and Joyce, the love of his life, married in 1964 initially living in Saltcoats. They relocated many times over the first ten years of their marriage as Robert worked at different construction and mine sites. It was always a priority for the family to be together, parenting Terri and Craig, in partnership. Our family had the opportunity to experience many different communities, but Saltcoats was always considered home and in 1975 they returned.
Robert’s experience in mine construction, led to an offer of a permanent position with IMC where he worked as a leader, with the philosophy that “you are only as good as the men who work for you” and “Safety Comes First”. Robert, after 32 years, retired from Mosaic in 2006. He immediately set up his own consulting company and worked on projects in and around Saltcoats until closing his business in 2019.
Robert lived his life to the fullest. He enjoyed setting, scheduling, and working hard to achieve the goal before him. He also made time to spend with his family and friends. Appreciating happy events in everybody’s lives as well as being there when called upon for help in times when things were not so pleasant. He loved, listening to music, going fishing with Glenn and travel. Robert and Joyce were fortunate enough to travel to many places-nine provinces in Canada, Europe, three river cruises as well as spending part of nine winters in Mexico. He was an avid snowshoer and hiker, disciplined about getting his 10,00 steps in even up to a couple of months before his passing.
Robert’s commitment to his community was unwavering- working on numerous committees as well as serving as Mayor and Councillor over the years. He loved early mornings, springtime and always set a task to build, renovate or repair for family, friends, or community.
Above all, Robert was a loving husband, father, son, brother, in-law, and friend. He will be missed and remembered by many.
A Celebration of Life Service will be held on Saturday, November 4, 2023, at the Saltcoats Town Hall at 11:00 am
