Larry Dale Smith was born February 22, 1947, in Melfort, Saskatchewan, to John and Laura (Lorna) Smith. In 1951, Larry moved to Saskatoon with his parents. In 1967, he moved to Snow Lake, Manitoba, and in this same year, hired on at Hudson Bay Mining and Smelting.
In 1971, he married Gladys, and in Oct 1974, they welcomed a daughter Samantha to their family. A son Richard was born in January of 1977, and this completed their family.
On April 11, 1975, Larry was injured in a mining accident at Chisel Lake mine. He was at a mounting platform waiting for a skip, a piece of falling ore struck Larry in the head, which caused a brain injury. He spent many months in the hospital in Winnipeg, Mb. Once fully recovered from his accident, he returned to HBM&S as a janitor in the change house at Chisel Lake until he retired on August 31, 1998.
Over the years, Larry enjoyed having fast cars, fast motorcycles, and many ski-doos. He owned a Mercury Cyclone, Dodge Super Bee, BSA Rocket 3, Kawasaki Eliminator, and a Harley Davidson Electra Glide, just to name a few. He loved watching his son play hockey, listening to loud music, watching tv, especially old western movies, and he loved animals but had a special love for dogs.
Larry moved to Tisdale in 1999. He enjoyed his time there with his Dad, sister Verlie and her family. He lived in a few locations before eventually moving to Bev’s Care Home in Kinistino, Saskatchewan in 2007. Larry’s final days were spent surrounded by family, and he passed away peacefully on Oct 24, 2023, in Melfort Hospital, at the age of 76.
Larry is predeceased by his parents, sister Sharleen Smith and sister Verlie Allgrove.
Larry is lovingly remembered by his daughter Samantha (Rob) Turnbull of Rocanville,Sk, his son Richard (Krystal Drotar) Smith of Brandon. His granddaughters Hayley (Kyle) Duncan of Rocanville,SK, Ceara (Jacob Clarke) of Rocanville, Vanessa Smith of Brandon, and great-granddaughter Hazel Clarke; as well as many other extended family members and friends.
