August 6, 1980 – November 20, 2024
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Vernon Nicotine, a proud member of the Red Pheasant First Nation and a cherished member of the Makwa Sagaiehican First Nation Community. Vernon began his journey to the Spirit World on November 20, 2024, surrounded by love, family, and the strength of our ancestors.
Born on August 6, 1980 in North Battleford, SK, Vernon was raised with the traditional teachings of our Cree Knowledge and People and lived a life deeply rooted in respect, generosity, and connection to his Cree heritage. He carried the wisdom of our ancestors and shared his knowledge and language freely, becoming a guide for many.
Vernon was a talented and humble oskâpêwis, who loved to laugh, visit, tease and be around family and friends. Throughout his life Vernon was blessed with kinship, creating a brotherhood and sisterhood with all those who got to know and love him. His love for his babies & nôsim was immense, he loved spending time with them and was always at his best being in their presence. He will be remembered for his gentle spirit, sharp wit, unwavering dedication to preserving the Cree way of life and his brilliant bingo calling. His laughter, stories, and teachings will remain in the hearts of all who knew him.
He leaves behind a loving family, including his loving mother Irene, nîcimos; Ruby Crookedneck, his children; Jaelyn Twin, Xavier, nôsim; Kaleigha, his siblings; Walter, Patrick (Marissa), Nathan (Leanne), Sheniya (Matt) and numerous uncles, aunties’, cousins and adopted relatives. Vernon was predeceased by his father Roy Mitsuing; and grandparents: John and Margaret Nicotine, and Joe Gervais and Margaret Mitsuing.
A traditional wake will be held on, Friday, November 22 2024 at the Makwa Sagaihican First Nation Community Hall. The funeral ceremony will follow on Saturday, November 23, 2024 at 11:00AM, led by elders and community members
In keeping with Cree traditions, the family kindly requests that attendees refrain from bringing young children to the wake and funeral. Vernon loved to sing, the family asks friends and relatives to bring their songs and drums. In proud Cree tradition if you are not able to be present, please join in honoring Vernon’s life through prayer, song, and stories.
The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the Nations of Red Pheasant and Makwa Sagaihican during this difficult time.
Though he has journeyed on, Vernon’s spirit will continue to guide and inspire us. His love for singing, his family, and his people will live on in the hearts of all who were blessed to know him.
Nanaskamoh for honoring his memory.
