Our hearts break as we announce the passing of Steve (Stephen) Hyde. He passed away suddenly at Royal University Hospital on November 5, 2024 from cardiac arrest. We thank the cardiology team and all the other hospital staff for their efforts and compassion. Steve is survived by his loving wife, Jan of 52 years as well as his two daughters, Reagan (husband Sean and their children, Keaton and Lucas) and Devon (children Marcus, Adam and Jade), his sister Susan (brother-in-law Cal) and his nephews Chris and Jeff and their children. He was predeceased by his parents, Don and Iris and stepfather Carl. Also mourning his loss are his cousin Elmer (wife Agnes and son Ron) Hyde. Steve also leaves behind his two loving cats, Trixie and Brady.
Steve was born June 23, 1952, in Saskatoon. All his schooling took place in Saskatoon, and he graduated from Kelsey Institute Renewable Resources Program in 1976, moving to Prince Albert. He had a 38-year career with the Forestry Department of SK Environment and later on with Department of Oil and Gas. In 2000 Steve and Jan returned to Saskatoon where they reunited with several good friends. Friendships were important to Steve, and he maintained close relationships with many from his childhood, teen, and young adult years as well as former co-workers. He brought laughter and love to the lives of so many.
Steve loved sports. He continued to play hockey until his knees would no longer allow it. He was a lifelong Maple Leafs Fan, suffering through many disappointments but never giving up hope. Steve supported Huskie Athletics. He bled green for his beloved Roughriders and recently speculated about travelling to Vancouver to watch them win the Grey Cup.
As a secondary career, Steve owned and operated a successful lawn irrigation company, Hyde Sprinklers, to which he was very dedicated. He cherished his longstanding customers and always gave them his best and passed his knowledge on to those who worked at his business. Steve was talking business until hours before he passed. (If that is not a LEGEND, we don’t know what is!).
Steve especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, through years of wrestling, football, hockey and many wonderful trips taken together. Travel to many places began with camping trips as a young family, extending to vacations around the world, enriching his life with many memorable experiences and adventures. Steve loved to hunt and fish and taught Hunter Safety in Prince Albert.
In lieu of flowers, we know Steve would appreciate donations to USask Sports (give.usask.ca/impact/areas/huskies.php) or to KidSport Saskatoon (kidsportcanada.ca/saskatchewan/saskatoon/donate).
A Celebration of Life will be held on Monday November 11, 2024 at 1:00 pm at Saskatoon Funeral Home (338 4th Ave N). Immediately following the service, our family invites you to share memories of Steve and a light lunch at the Edwards Family Center.
