Edwin John Walker, affectionately known as Jack to all who knew and loved him, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 1, 2023, in Regina, SK at the age of 91 years. Born on May 1, 1932, in Winnipeg, MB, Jack’s life was a testament to his gentle spirit, his unwavering kindness, and his loving nature.
Jack’s journey began as the son of a tree nursery superintendent in Indian Head, SK, where he cultivated a deep-seated love for plants and design. This passion led him to pursue an illustrious educational path, earning a Bachelor of Agriculture from the University of Saskatchewan, a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture from the University of California, and a Master of Landscape Architecture from the University of Michigan.
His career flourished when, after a stint working in Ottawa, he was drawn back to his roots working at the Wascana Centre Authority. Jack’s visionary design and management skills are visible in numerous facets of the park that are cherished by visitors and locals alike. His contributions include the creation of pathways, the Waterfowl Park Display Ponds, the pumphouse overlooks, public washrooms, premiers’ monuments, the Surveyors’ Monument, and the comprehensive design of the park’s amenities, parking lots, and roads. Jack was one of Saskatchewan’s and Regina’s most influential landscape architects, shaping the city’s aesthetic and functional landscape for generations to enjoy.
His professional accolades were many, serving as the President of the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects from 1968 to 1970. He was inducted into the CSLA College of Fellows in 1972, and awarded a lifetime achievement award in 2013, an honor that recognized his significant contributions to the field. In 1975, Jack founded Habitat Design Ltd., where he continued to practice landscape architecture with dedication and excellence well into his 80s.
Jack’s legacy includes the establishment of the Saskatchewan Association of Landscape Architects in 1980, which he led as its first President. He was provided a lifetime membership in 2012 by the association. His efforts ensured that Saskatchewan’s landscape architects had a local voice and representation, fostering a community of professionals dedicated to enhancing the natural beauty of the province.
Outside of his professional life, Jack with his beloved wife, Lois, enjoyed traveling and savoring the warm winters of Mazatlan, Mexico. At home, he found solace and joy in tending to his plants and propagating new life in his nursery, a reflection of his nurturing soul.
Jack’s memory will be cherished by his devoted wife of 46 years, Lois Walker; his children, David Walker and his wife Fran Walker, Sheila Brooks and her husband Kirk Brooks, Todd Donnelly and his wife Tricia Donnelly, and Rob Donnelly and his wife Bee Donnelly; his brother, Spence Walker and family; as well as his treasured grandchildren, Violet Walker, Jordan Donnelly, Eric Donnelly, Tim Donnelly, Luke Donnelly, and Adam Brooks; and great-grandchild Ethan Donnelly.
The world has lost a man of extraordinary talent and a heart of gold. Jack Walker’s impact on the field of landscape architecture and the numerous lives he touched will resonate far beyond his years. His gentle, kind, and loving nature will be profoundly missed by family, friends, and the many colleagues and community members whose lives he enriched. Jack’s spirit, like the landscapes he so beautifully crafted, will continue to inspire and comfort all who had the privilege of knowing him.
