“Ted” George Edward Rye
1928 – 2023
“Ted” George Edward Rye was born in Aldershot, England on April 7th, 1928. He spent his early life in Alexandria, Egypt where his father was stationed as a farrier in the army. They moved to Shoeburyness in Es, where Ted spent his primary school years. During WW2, Ted was evacuated with Southend High School to Mansfield, Notts, where he lived with Fritz and Mildred, who became lifelong friends. He helped Fritz ID aircraft from the roof of the cinema.
He trained as a teacher at Culham College near Oxford and met Hazel while doing teaching practice at Stanford in the Vale. He told her the second time he saw her that they would go places together.
Ted did two years national service as a teacher in the army, based in Trieste, Italy and both he and Hazel saved to get married on December 23rd, 1950 when he was demobbed. They lived in Shoeburyness, Es for 36 years, where he taught science, geography and economics at the high school, while Hazel taught juniors and encouraged them to bring something to show and tell, before that was a thing children did.
They both loved education. In their spare time they enjoyed theatre and operas, and taking trips across Europe in the caravan with their son John. That love of theatre, music and travel was instilled into their son and grandchildren. They also loved to garden and ski.
On retirement in 1986 they immigrated to Prince Albert, SK to where John and his wife Christine had moved. Ted and Hazel spent this last 38 years helping to raise their grandchildren, golfing, skiing, curling and travelling back and forth to the UK. They enjoyed watching operas and DVD’s and sharing them with the family. They were members of St Alban’s Cathedral, where Ted was a sidesman for many years until health issues prevented this. Afternoon tea with family continued several times a week until just before he died on October 7th 2023.
Ted leaves to mourn, his wife Hazel, of 73 years; his son John (Christine); his grandchildren Michael, Peter (Alexandra), Max nee Deborah (Grant); and his great grandchildren Elizabeth and Annabel as well as extended family in the UK.
Thank you to homecare, paramedics, ER staff, and the Drs and staff on level 6 for your care of us all. Thank you to Dr Owonikoko for his care over these past years.
A Celebration of Ted’s life will be held on Sunday, October 15th, 2023 at 4:00 p.m. at St George’s Anglican Church, 1104 4th Street East, Prince Albert, SK. In lieu of flowers please put some money towards the education of your children or grandchildren.
