Lois Richer Obituary
Lois was born in Nipawin, SK, on March 29, 1953 to Wilfred and Dorothea Schill of White Fox. The family lived in White Fox until Lois’ high school years, when her parents moved to Nipawin to expand their business, ABC Electric & Furniture. Lois worked in and ran the store for several years while at home. After high school, Lois worked as a hairstylist for a short time before accepting a Corporate Human Resources Manager role with Zellers headquarters in Winnipeg, running multiple stores and overseeing all levels of managers. She excelled at the position and later had many stories to tell of those times.
A few years later, Lois moved back to Nipawin to help run ABC Electric while her mother was attending University. With the upcoming construction of the Nipawin Hydroelectric station in the early 1980’s, Lois delved into the restaurant business by building and establishing her own restaurant, Spindrift Inns, also known to locals as “EAT” due to the neon sign on the building. With her phenomenal cooking and natural management skills, EAT soon became one of the busiest restaurants in town, offering buffets, home made baking, pies, and seafood. Many customers came for breakfast, took a bag lunch, and returned for supper while working on the dam. It was at her restaurant that she met her husband, Barry.
A few years after they married, Lois sold her successful business and spent most of the next decade being a wife and mother. It was during this time that she completed her University degree in Honours Linguistics and began her true passion… writing! In 1997, Lois was one of the first authors who was published by Harlequin’s new Love Inspired division in New York, NY. She also wrote for Tyndale House and several other publishers over the span of her 25 year writing career. Not one of Lois’ stories did she ever self-publish, all 70 of them having been purchased by major international publishing houses, a true feat on its own! Her novels, which were inspired by her and Barry’s travel all over the world, were sold internationally and translated into a number of languages. Asked in 2014 why she wrote, Lois said, “So that I can tell stories that contain the things I believe in. To talk about God is freeing”. As evidenced by the mail she received, many people the world over were encouraged and touched by her writing that reflected her faith in Christ.
In the early 2000’s, Torch Trail Bible Camp was short a cook for part of the summer. Lois took up the challenge of running the kitchen and spent four weeks cooking for the staff and kids at camp. During those weeks working in the kitchen, unbeknownst to anyone, she developed plot lines for three fictional novels set at Torch Trail. These were later purchased and published by Tyndale House Publishers. In the final book in that series, Shadowed Secrets, Lois’ dedication reads “This book is dedicated to the Father, who knows our deepest secrets and loves us anyway”. No statement could more accurately describe why Lois wrote with the passion that she did.
Lois is survived by her loving husband, Barry; her children, Cris Richer and Joshua (Anneka) Richer; her sisters, Judy (Ken) Orthner, and Connie Schill Sauder; along with her grandchildren, nephews, nieces, and many other family and friends.
To honour Lois’ purpose and passion, the family has requested that, in lieu of flowers, memorial donations be made to
Torch Trail Bible Camp’s 75th Anniversary Kitchen project.
