Obituary
With heavy hearts, the family of the late Lena Kobelka announce her passing on May 14, 2024, at the age of 101 years.
Lena Kobelka was born to Andrew and Mary (nee Paskareck) Osachuk on February 1, 1923, on a farm 9 miles south of Canora, SK.
After her mother’s passing, they moved to Benito, MB, where she grew up with 17 brothers, sisters, step-brothers, and step-sisters. She went to school in Benito and was out working at an early age of 14. She met her husband, Nick, at a dance in Hyas, SK, and they were married on January 14, 1940. They spent the winter in Vancouver, BC, and in the spring moved back to Saskatchewan where they purchased a quarter of land and began farming. During their time together they raised five children and with the passing of her husband in 1977 she lived on the farm until 1983 at which time she moved to Canora. She continued to live in her house until 2006, when she moved into the low housing units.
After this, in 2017, she resided in the Canora Gateway Lodge.
Lena was a very good cook and enjoyed tending to her garden and growing beautiful flowers. Many winters were spent crocheting, knitting and making quilts for all her children. She enjoyed her trips to Vancouver, Banff, Jasper, Waterton Lake, Nashville, Branson, Calgary and many country and Ukrainian music festivals.
Lena was an avid member of the Canora United Church and also took part in singing with the singing group called, The Joy of Singing. Longevity of her life was contributed to her spiritual belief and listening to church services and gospel music as well as Bible reading.
Lena was predeceased by her husband, Nick, in 1977; son-in-law, Lorne Kish; great grandchild, Nicholas Brigham; her brother, Nick; step-brothers: Johnny, Bill, Max, Steve, Mike, and Paul; and her sister, Ann; and step- sisters: Jean, Mary, Sally, Helen, Phyllis, and Carol.
She is survived by her daughters, Shirley (Keith) Derkatz and Phyllis Kish; sons: Ron (Martha) Kobelka, David (Doreen) Kobelka, and Darrell (Sherri-Jo) Kobelka; numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great grandchildren, as well as her step-sisters: Ollie, Dorothy, and Aggie.
A Private Graveside Memorial Service will be held at a later date. Those wishing to make expressions of sympathy may make donations to the Canora Hospital Auxiliary – Palliative Care Unit, in memory of Lena Kobelka.
