Sheila Schouela (Née Hallac)
Peacefully at ninety-eight years old, on Tuesday, January 2, 2024, after a long and full life. She was born in Beirut, Lebanon and lived in Cairo, Egypt for a number of years where she met her cherished husband Maurice, who predeceased her in 1985. They settled in Montreal in 1953.
Sheila touched many people over the years and continued to do so until her passing. She was a remarkable woman with joie de vivre and charisma that inspired everyone around her.
Sheila was the loving mother and mother-in-law of Lillian and Billy Mauer, Susan Schouela, Evelyn Schouela, and Diane and Robert Sasson. Dear grandmother of Liza Mauer and Andrew Sheiner, Jacqueline Mauer and Brian Leven, Gabriel and Jennifer Shaffer, Arianne Shaffer, Natanya Nerenberg and Marvin Harder, Daniel Nerenberg and Rochelle Arms, Vanessa Sasson and Sebastien Hinse, Audrey Sasson and Erika Sasson and Misha Shulman. Devoted great-grandmother of Lucas, Gabrielle, Charles, Sophia, Augie, Talula, Corey, Jonathan, Greta, Emmett, Soli, Darshan, Matan, Ezekiel and Emmanuel. Cherished sister and sister-in-law of Margot Azoulai, Albert and Carol Hallac, the late Loulou and the late Raymond Somekh; and sister-in-law of Edouard Schouela. Predeceased by her partner Nat Finkelstein. She will also be greatly missed by her many nieces and nephews who deeply cared for her.
The family is indebted to her caregivers Winsome Vassall, Desirée Quintana, Arlene Calotes, Bing Luzsaragena, Veronica Cortes Flores, Gracie Sandy, and Dolores Guitering. Each one has been a blessing for her. A very special thank you goes to Dr. Vinh-Kim Nguyen who accompanied Sheila in her last days with great kindness and respect.
Funeral Service from Paperman & Sons, 3888 Jean Talon St. W., on Thursday, January 4 at 11:00 a.m. Burial at the Beth El Congregation Section, Eternal Gardens Cemetery, Beaconsfield. Shiva at her home, 1455 Sherbrooke St. W. #2605, Montreal.
