Verne Harvey Obituary
Verne Albert Harvey, a cherished soul whose life was marked by dedication, love, and a ceaseless zest for learning, passed away on June 17, 2024, at the age of 91.
Verne’s life was a beautiful tapestry woven with the love of his late wife, Mary-Ann, who was the cornerstone of his world. Verne was a loving father and step-father to daughters Deb Winlaw, Carol Robb (John), and Leanne Bowden (Marcel and their daughter Emma). He was a beacon of wisdom and fun for his grandchildren, Paul, Josh (Nobu), Justin (Meghan), Brandon (April), and Shawn (Shannon), and he cherished every moment as a great-grandpa to Kinsley, Oakley, Benjamin, Emersyn, Kinsley, and Brielle. His siblings, Morley (late Marion) and Irene (late Harry), will remember him fondly, as will his special friend, Janet Campbell. Verne’s absence will be deeply felt by his many friends.
Verne’s professional life was as impactful as his personal one. He served as a principal for 33 years with the former Oxford County School Board until his well-earned retirement in 1987, serving at North Norwich Public School, Innerkip Public School and AJ Baker and Wildwood Public Schools. His passion for capturing moments led him to become a professional photographer. Music was another of Verne’s lifelong loves; he was not only an enthusiastic trumpet player but also took on the challenge of learning to play the saxophone at the age of 80. His intellectual curiosity knew no bounds, and at 90, he built and programmed a robot.
Verne’s interests painted the picture of a man who embraced life with open arms. He was an avid moonflower enthusiast, cultivating beauty in his garden under the night sky. His passion for football was evident in his unwavering support for the Hamilton Tiger-Cats. Verne and Mary-Ann’s adventurous spirit took them across North America in their trailer, creating a tapestry of memories that spanned the continent. Above all, Verne’s pride and joy were his family, who were the recipients of his boundless love and support.
Predeceased by his parents, Emery and Hope Harvey, Verne’s legacy is one of love, learning, and laughter. Verne’s story is not just one of a life well-lived but of a life lived well for others.
Friends will be received at the Brock and Visser Funeral Home, 845 Devonshire Ave, Woodstock, on Saturday, June 29th from 10am to 12pm. A service celebrating Verne’s life will begin at 12pm, with a reception to follow. Interment at Tillsonburg Cemetery. For those who wish, memorial donations may be made to the Heart and Stroke Foundation or the Canadian Cancer Society.
