Obituary of Giovanni Facca
With sorrow, we announce the peaceful passing of Giovanni ‘Popi” at the age of 95, surrounded by his beloved family. He has now joined his cherished wife, Ida, who passed in 2016. Giovanni was a devoted father to Edy (Maria) and Andrew, a source of pride as a grandfather to Julianna (Carlo) Orlando, and Selina, and a beacon of joy as a great grandfather to Maiella and Joseph. He is preceded in death by his parents Maria and Antonio, as well as his siblings Pino and Nello. His memory will be forever treasured by his extended family and dear friends.
In 1955, Giovanni embarked on a new chapter in Canada, where he married his Italian sweetheart, Ida, in 1956. He dedicated numerous years to his craft as a tile setter and terrazzo maker. A pillar of the community, Giovanni’s involvement with the Giovanni Caboto Club spanned decades, during which he served in various capacities including President, Vice President, and President of the Caboto Bocciofila. His compassionate spirit shone brightly as he undertook the role of Sick Visitor, offering solace to members in times of illness. Notably, his philanthropic endeavors extended to aiding fundraising initiatives following the 1976 Fruili Earthquake. Among his many contributions, Giovanni’s coaching prowess led the 1st Caboto Soccer team to victory in the Ontario Cup in 1961. Popi was a long term fan of the Juventus soccer club and the Montreal Canadians.
Giovanni’s legacy as a remarkable individual will endure in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. Visitation will be held at Windsor Chapel – Central Chapel (1700 Tecumseh Rd E, 519-253-7234) on Tuesday, March 26, 2024, from 2-5pm and 7-9pm, with Parish prayers at 4:30pm. Funeral Service on Wednesday, March 27th 2024 at 9:00 am from the funeral home then to St Angela Merici Church (980 Louis Ave) for a funeral mass at 9:30am. Entombment to follow at Heavenly Rest Cemetery.
