ABEL, William “Bill” –
William “Bill” Abel, 84 passed away peacefully after a short illness on 24th September 2024 in Nelson district at The Village of Tansley Woods LTC Burlington. Born May 4th, 1940, to William & Janet (both predeceased) in his beloved hometown of Montrose, Scotland. Bill, survived by his 14-year junior only sibling Glynis her husband Kevan, niece Rhonda and her children Greg and Jodi, whom he loved dearly.
Bill was an incredibly quiet, shy, and studious child achieving the honour of Dux on leaving junior school, he left secondary school as a high achiever in many subjects. On receiving a scholarship, he furthered his education at Heriot Watt University Edinburgh where he received his 1st Class Honours degree in engineering. This was to take him to Lynn Lake Manitoba Canada in 1965, aged 25 with £25 in his pocket. Bills next short stop was Zambia in Africa then in 1969 Sudbury Ontario where he worked as a mining engineer for over 25 years at Vale (INCO) until his retirement. Sudbury was meant to be a stop gap along life’s path, but he liked Sudbury, and the friends and family away from home he had made there and stayed. Bill met his wife Cynthia (predeceased) 1985 and married at age 50 in 1990. They had a long and happy marriage and loved nothing more than to travel coast to coast in Canada the Caribbean, Europe, South America and of course back to his hometown Montrose on many occasions.
Bill is to be cremated and, as per his wishes, taken “home” to Scotland to be with his family. The staff where Bill spent his last few months were so very respectful loving and kind to this soft-spoken gentle man. There will be a private celebration of life in Burlington.
