GIANCARLO, Shirley (nee Murchie) passed peacefully on November 16th, 2023 in her 96th year. Loved by son Sandy (Cathy) and granddaughter Summer. Predeceased by her beloved husband John, her four sisters Jean, Dolly, Ella, Annie and five brothers George, Bill, Doug, Jimmy and Tunney. Most of her siblings were born in Scotland, but her family emigrated to Canada and Shirley was born on November 30th, 1927 in the village of Beebe, Quebec where she spent the first few years of her life. She then enjoyed the rest of her youth with her family on Somerset Avenue in Hamilton. As a naturally talented artist she concentrated her studies in the arts at high school, where she met her future husband John. Shirley and John were married in Hamilton in 1952 and moved together to Niagara, living for many years in Welland and Fonthill. Shirley had a great enthusiasm for life and thoroughly enjoyed socializing with friends and relatives. Her outgoing personality, generosity, laughter and kindness will be remembered by the many people whose lives she touched. She also had a love for animals, particularly cats. She and John enjoyed the companionship of many feline friends over the years. She was a board member of the Welland Humane Society for many years and actively led and participated in fundraising campaigns for the animal shelter. She was awarded a lifetime membership to the Welland Humane Society in recognition of her dedicated service. Later in her life she also assisted and donated to other animal rescue organizations in the Niagara area. Thanks go to the staff of Millennium Trail Manor for their attentive care of Shirley as her health declined.
The family will receive their friends at the H. L. Cudney Funeral Home, 241 West Main Street, Welland on Thursday, November 23rd from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and Friday, November 24th from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. followed by a memorial service in the chapel, at 11:00 a.m. Interment in Woodlawn Cemetery.
