Rev. Dr. Melvyn Raymond Hillmer Obituary
It is with profound sadness and much love that we announce the passing of Melvyn Raymond Hillmer at AgeCare Glen Oaks long term care home in Oakville on Tuesday, March 5, 2024 at the age of 92 years.
Mel was a devoted husband to his loving wife Indra. He will be remembered as a kind and gentle father by Michael (Maria), Steven (Lydia), Joanna (Mike), Randy (Jenn) and their mother Elizabeth. He was a proud Poppa/Grandad to Sarah (Mark), Rhyan, Jennifer (Jon), Kathleen (Jordan), John, Samantha, Jacob, Isaac, and Charley; and a Great Grandad to Madison, Lukas, Merik, Lauren, Ethan, Aiden, and Olive. Mel is survived by his three brothers Bert (Norma), Ken (Luella), and John (Jean); brother-in-law Claus, and sisters-in-law Cleone, and Barbara; and many nieces and nephews. Mel was predeceased by brothers-in-law J.A. and B.A.
Mel enjoyed a life-long love of reading and took great pleasure in sailing, gardening, and wood-working. He was a biblical scholar, professor of New Testament, and then Principal of McMaster Divinity College. He was intimately familiar with biblical literature and communicated his commitment to excellence through his popular classes and his mentorship of numerous young ministers both within and beyond his beloved Baptist denomination.
Mel was a gentle spirit, who was respectful and accepting of all people. He had a contagious smile, warm and inviting demeanour, and brought a sense of peace and calm to those who knew him. He was a beloved pastor to Wolverton and Drumbo Baptist Churches, Medford First Baptist Church in Medford Massachusetts as a young student, and to Mountsberg and Westover Baptist Churches in his later years. In between these churches he was an active member at Burlington Baptist Church.
The family appreciates AgeCare for the support they showed to Mel in his final days.
Visitation will take place at Burlington Baptist Church (2225 New Street) on Friday, April 12 from 4-6 pm and 7-9 pm. A celebration of life will take place at Mountsberg Baptist Church (245 Campbellville Road) on Saturday, April 13 at 2pm.
In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations to the Parkinson’s Foundation, Mountsberg Baptist Church, or AgeCare Glen Oaks in Oakville.
