Phyllis Margaret Hood Obituary
It is with heavy hearts the family of Phyllis Margaret Hood (nee Carron) announce her passing on July 24 at 8:20am.
Born January 15th, 1940 in Hamilton to a close family with a French father (Philip) and British mother (Esther), Phyllis was the youngest girl of 7 children. Happy childhood memories included sibling baseball games complete with broken windows that her Dad dutifully replaced many times, her Mom’s good for the soul / bad for the heart mac ‘n cheese, followed by egg custard (yuck) for dessert, and her beloved dog Pat.
As a young bride in 1964, she moved to her new home of 59 years in Waterdown with husband Lloyd. Both welcomed and raised their children Jacqueline (Denis) and Craig (Jenifer) in the village surrounded by amazing neighbours who became life long friends. Phyllis was happiest being a loving, supportive and involved mother who had a wooden spoon in her kitchen drawer to keep us in line, and as a proud Grandmother. She adored her 6 grandchildren; Alexander (Erica), Samantha (Raymond), Evan, Austin, Thomas, and Kailee, with the icing on the cake being the addition of her great-grandbabies Sophie and Hailey. Mom’s heart while physically weak had lots of emotional room, and she was happy to invite Morgen in to be her daughter-in-heart.
She had many fond family memories of bowling leagues and Optimist baseball games with her husband; family car trips to Nova Scotia to see her sister Agnes (Maurice), Shirley’s (Vic) much loved and fought over Green Jello Pineapple Salad at all family gatherings, Florida vacations with Sadie (George), bun fights in the kitchen with Wallace (Patricia), teasing calls of “Cheater” when playing Euchre with her brother Harvey (bless you Auntie Dorothy for trying to keep the peace!), and her love for her youngest brother Philip.
As a young widow Phyllis kept up with her passions; endless knitting projects and pie making, as well as weekly card games and occasional trips with her beloved Waterdown Seniors Club.
Since last Fall, Phyllis has called Alexander Place her temporary home, and our family wishes to extend our gratitude to the senior staff, nurses, Rec team and loving PSW’s for always encouraging her joyous spark and humour as her health continued to decline. She will miss you all, as well as Igor the Cockatoo and her much fussed over and continuously fed wild birds and squirrels. The wildlife will miss their unending supply of peanuts and may be extra loud until you remember to bring more snacks!
Phyllis was a lifelong animal lover, especially Sully and Dora her fur babies, so in lieu of flowers please send a donation to the SPCA or in keeping with her spirit, make someone laugh and pass on kindness to a stranger.
Cremation has already taken place, and will be followed with a private family internment. Also, as she requested, some of her ashes will be sprinkled under her favourite wild roses at her daughter and son-in-law’s cottage by the sea on Isle Madame, Cape Breton.
The Carron Progressive Euchre game has a new player! Grandma please don’t let Uncle Harvey and Mom be partners – their bickering will have them tossed out of Heaven!
Please sign the Tribute Wall.
