Milla Suit (nee Maiblum) Obituary
In her 96th year passed away peacefully with her two daughters by her side on Monday, December 4th, 2023 in Burlington Ontario. Milla was born in Kolga manorhouse, Viru County, Haljala Parish, Eisma, Estonia to Leena Maiblum on November 25th, 1928. When Milla was an infant her mother had an accidental death, so she went to live on her aunt Anni (Leena’s sister) and uncle Gustav’s farm in Eisma where she lived happily until the second World War. At 15 years of age Milla, one of her step-sisters and a small boatload of coastal inhabitants escaped to Sweden. After meeting and marrying the love of her life Max Suit, they immigrated to Canada.
Milla sewed as a seamstress, dressmaker and masterful needlepoint artist throughout her life working for special clients and for Lipton’s retail clothing company. Her fashion style was bold, iconic, and her poise inspired whoever was in her presence.
They made Burlington their new home and became very active in the First Estonian Evangelical Lutheran Congregation in Hamilton. She loved gardening, entertaining friends, and making family gatherings special in their home as chef to fabulous 8 course dinners, especially at Christmas. Her Valentine’s crepe brunches were epic with as many as 54 guests attending.
Milla is survived by her half-sister Salme Tuisk (Silvia Raiend) in Estonia, daughters Tiina Coverdale (Robert) and Eve Bowder (Robert). She was a loving grandmother to Erik and Kara-Lis Coverdale and Max and Jacob Bowder, a great-grandmother to Clementine (Erik) as well as a kind aunt to her nieces and nephews, some of who reside in the UK, Sweden, and Estonia.
Her cremation has taken place and a private interment of her ashes and ceremony will take place at her final resting place at Bethel Memorial Cemetery in Burlington. Please sign the Tribute Wall.
