Martina Span Obituary
On January 23, 2024 in his infinite grace and wisdom, Our Loving Heavenly Father called his cherished daughter, Martina “Tina” Span to her forever home.
In her 90th year, Martina Span (nee den Hertog) leaves behind her husband William “Bill” Span to whom she was married for 69 years. Together they had four children: Gerald (Margaret); John (Anne); Edith (John) Frank; and Tim (Jackie). They had seven grandchildren: Katrina (Will) and Rachel; Joel (fiancée Vickte), Caleb (Amber), David; Andrew and Joe (Nicole). They had five great-grandchildren: Levi, Henry and Silas (Will and Katrina) and Charlotte (Joe and Nicole).
Born in Vianen (the Netherlands) in 1934 to Gerrit and Dirkje den Hertog, she had 11 brothers and sisters: Jannie† (Dirk Heinen†/Adri†) Kant; Piet† (Nel†); Atie† (Teus†) Bergeijk; Teun† (Griet†); Edith (Adri†) Teunissen; Gerard (Geertje); Ina† (Cor) Ras; Henk† (Coby†/partner Lien); Truus† (Wopke†) Hoekstra; Martin†; Nellie (Otte) VandeWeide.
She was a dress-maker and immigrated to Canada in 1954 and married the love of her life on July 1st of that same year. She and Dad lived in Kingston, Toronto, Brantford and Waterdown. Besides being a faithful wife and mother, Tina was passionate about evangelism and had a heart for the lost and the hurting. She welcomed people at the churches she attended, hosted friends and family at home with a generous heart, prayed constantly, and for a ten-year period Tina and Bill served as missionaries on a floating, Christian, hospital ship.
Tina loved to sing about Jesus and one of her favourite songs was “I will sing of My Redeemer.”
The family would like to thank her dear friends for their prayers, visits, bedside Bible readings, and their kindnesses over the years. We would like to thank all those support workers who helped us navigate this difficult time. She will be missed by her church family at Flamborough Christian Fellowship.
“Jesus said… “I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in Me will live, even if they die.” (John 11:25)
Visitation at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME, 146 Mill St. N., Waterdown on Friday, Jan. 26, 2024 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held at FLAMBOROUGH CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP on Saturday, Jan. 27, 2024 at 11 a.m. Lunch to follow. Private Family Interment to precede the Service at Garden Lane Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, donations made to either Hope and Healing International or Mercy Ships would be sincerely appreciated by the family.
