Irène Matilda Poelmann Obituary
Passed away peacefully at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ontario on July 31, 2024. She is lovingly remembered by her daughters Irene (Mario), and Mary Lou (Maurice) and her sons Joe and Charles (Chuck). Irene was a special Grandmother to Vincent, Nicholas, Daniel, Anthony, Christopher, Andrew, Paul, Amanda, Mark, Robbie and Dalton as well as Great-Grandmother to many more! She will also be dearly missed by her special friends Rennie and Howard Arsenault and Lisa Collins.
Irène is predeceased by her husband Joseph (Jos), parents, Charles and Leonie Schlick, sister, Yvonne Rijckenberg, granddaughter, Tammy Johnson and great-granddaughter Myla Mae Hamoline.
Irène was born in Surabaya, Indonesia but spent her formative years in the Netherlands. After marrying her husband, Jos, they moved to Canada where they started their family. During her extensive travels, Irène mastered 7 languages including English, French, German, Dutch, Italian, Spanish and her native tongue, Indonesia!
Throughout her long life, Irène has been deeply committed to her Roman Catholic faith. She has been a devout servant of the 3rd Order of St. Francis as well as the Legion of Mary at her beloved, San Damiano in Italy, where she lived for 5 years.
Irène was passionate about many things, some of which included her missionary and volunteer work, classical music and of course, her family.
Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday, August 6, 2024 from 9:30 – 10:15 a.m. at KITCHING, STEEPE, & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME, 146 Mill St. N., Waterdown. Mass of Catholic burial will begin at 10:30 a.m. at ST. THOMAS THE APOSTLE CHURCH, 715 Centre Rd., Waterdown. Interment to follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
As an expression of sympathy, donations to the Franciscan Missions would be appreciated by the family.
