Legend has it Helen and Dan met in a Toronto restaurant where Dan crumpled up a napkin and tossed it at the back of Helen’s head to get her attention… it worked. Dan had migrated from Saskatchewan and was working as an auto mechanic. Helen was a very talented seamstress working in the upholstery department at the downtown Toronto Simpson department store. They moved back to East Flamborough to marry in 1943 and raise their family.
Mom was a fantastic cook and baker. We all remember the “sourdough years” when cinnamon buns were on the table every day. Raised on the farm, we were spoiled with home cooked meals and a cold cellar full of canned fruit, vegetables, pickles and tomato juice. She was a loving mother who, with dad, led by example to instil strong family values in their kids and grandkids. One of their greatest joys was playing the fiddle and banjo every Thursday at the Waterdown Legion where many of their later-year friendships were formed.
A sincere thank you to all the staff and PSW’s at Wellington Park Care Centre, Village Manor and St. Elizabeth’s for their wonderful care. A special thank you to Dr. Heather McCarrel and Jeff Wong at Carlisle Medical Centre, and the team of Wellington Park doctors and nurses who genuinely cared for mom’s well-being. She was in very good hands.
Mom, we love and miss you but dad’s been waiting patiently for you to join him. May you both rest in peace now.
Cremation has taken place. A Celebration of Life will be held Saturday, November 2, 2024 from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME 146 Mill St. N., Waterdown.
