George Orest Wesolowsky Obituary
Passed away peacefully at Joseph Brant Hospital in Burlington, Ontario, in the company of his cherished family.
George was born in what was known at the time as Troppau, Germany (now Opava, Czech Republic), while his parents were fleeing the Russian invasion of Western Ukraine. He spent his youth in a Displaced Persons camp for refugees in Germany, and eventually emigrated to Canada in 1949 with his parents, settling first in Sudbury, and then in Toronto. George completed his high school studies in Toronto, and then joined the Royal Canadian Air Force, attaining the rank of Flying Officer (despite not actually being able to fly a plane!), while he was completing his university studies. He achieved his Bachelor of Engineering from the University of Toronto (1963), Master of Business Administration at the University of Western Ontario (1966) and Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (1970). While at Western, he met his future wife Sharon, at an engineering/nursing mixer dance, where Sharon “accidentally” put her watch in his suit pocket as an excuse to seek him out later during the evening to have another dance. They were married in Milwaukee, Wisconsin in 1967. While in Wisconsin they shared a farmhouse with Bob and Ingrid Love, who became dear life-long friends.
Moving back to Canada in 1970, they settled in Aldershot where George accepted an appointment as a Professor at the School of Business at McMaster University in Hamilton, a position he would hold until his retirement. His research focused on “Location Theory”, which involves the optimization of where and why to locate various economic facilities and locations in a geographical area. Please think of George every time your Amazon package arrives on time, as it was part of his work that contributed to the increased efficiency of the distribution and delivery of goods. George loved his family dearly (including his many dogs), enjoyed watching Samurai movies, and most of all, savoured eating chocolate, preferably dark. He and Sharon also spent significant parts of each summer at the family cottage in Burk’s Falls, Ontario, entertaining family and friends.
He is predeceased by his wife of almost 55 years, Sharon Ida Gertrude (Horning) Wesolowsky, and his sister Maria Christina Wesolowsky who was lost before his birth, due to the aforementioned flight from the Russian Army. He is survived by his son Michael (Julia) and grandchildren Natalia, Lesya, Maximus and Vera. Our family is very grateful for the truly outstanding care by staff and volunteers in the Intensive Care Unit at Joseph Brant Hospital, with too many dedicated professionals to name within the confines of a single obituary. Our family also owes a tremendous debt of gratitude to the team at the Best Care Agency (personal support workers), who assisted us in optimizing his (and Sharon’s) final years.
Friends may visit with the family at KITCHING, STEEPE & LUDWIG FUNERAL HOME 146 Mill St. N., Waterdown on Friday, August 23, 2024 from 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Panakhyda (Memorial Prayers) will be at 3:45 p.m. A Funeral Mass will take place the following day, Saturday, August 24, 2024 at HOLY PROTECTION OF THE BLESSED VIRGIN MARY UKRAINIAN CATHOLIC CHURCH, 419 Pearl St., Burlington beginning at 10 a.m. Interment to follow at Woodland Cemetery.
Last, but not least, a big thank you to the staff of Lasalle Park Retirement Community, where my father comfortably resided for the last seven years.
In lieu of flowers, donations to Parkinson Canada would be greatly appreciated.
