On December 4th, 2023, Lester Schenk passed away with his wife and daughter by his side. Lester will be sadly missed by his loving wife Aleda and his daughter Debbie (Murray) Schenk, and nieces, Shirley Leudke (Wiseman), Marilyn Lerch (Kreller) and Marjorie Green (Schenk).
Lester Wellington Schenk was born in Dashwood, Ontario on September 14, 1922. His parents Clara and Wellington operated a bake shop for a number of years before purchasing a farm near Riversdale. Lester had many fond memories of working on the farm and fishing at the river behind their farm. Life was hard but simple, walking through snow to get to a neighbour with a car to drive to Walkerton for a hockey game, or listening to it on their radio on Saturday nights. Lester worked for Bruce County Highways department for over 30 years, painting signs and patrolling miles of roads in bad conditions in the days of good old fashioned Bruce County winters.
When asked what kept him going to his ripe old age, he would say “Hard work, onion sandwiches and my wife ‘Aleda’.” He always had a wry smile for visitors and loved nothing more than reading the paper or watching TV. He was a simple man who never asked for much. Lester will be missed by all who knew him.
Friends and relatives are invited for visitation from 9:30 a.m. until the time of service at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, December 8, 2023, at Cameron’s in Walkerton. Rev. Pamela McNeil officiating.
Interment in Walkerton Cemetery.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Walkerton and District Hospital Foundation would be appreciated by the family. Donations and condolences may be made online at www.cameronfuneralhomes.com
