J. Donald Waechter Q.C.
Dad slipped away on May 22, 2024, after a brief illness, with his family by his side. He reached the venerable age of 93 and has joined the love of his life, Doreen.
He will be fondly remembered by his daughters Sandra and Jane (Roman), his granddaughter Alexandra, and his nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by Mom, his sisters Irene and Phyllis, his brother Allan, and by the many close friends and family members he outlived.
Dad was born in Formosa and lived in Walkerton from an early age. He spent the exact amount of time it took to graduate from law school at Osgoode Hall in Toronto before coming right back to Walkerton. He met Mom in Port Elgin. They were married in Guelph and spent happy years in Walkerton.
Dad worked as a lawyer in Walkerton. He was proud to help local residents, businesses and municipal authorities with their legal issues. His professionalism was recognized with an appointment as Queen’s Counsel. He was dedicated to public service in the community he loved. He was a member of Walkerton Town Council and the Kinsmen Club. He was a proud supporter of the Walkerton Hospital.
Anyone who knew Dad knew that he liked to be in the middle of the action, but never at the centre of attention. He spent summers golfing and winters curling at the Walkerton Golf and Country Club, of which he was a founding member. He enjoyed playing bridge with family and friends, and he was notoriously difficult to beat. He developed a love of playing pool in childhood when he was allowed into the pool hall after school if there were no adults playing. He continued to play pool in the local league well into his 80s, astonishing many with his skill.
Dad’s cottage in Port Elgin was his peaceful place, where he went to relax and enjoy his sunset walks. He loved it when the cottage was full of people and laughter. People knew that they could wander up from a day at the beach and be welcomed by him for some barbecue.
He was an intrepid traveller and had amazing adventures travelling with family and friends throughout the US, Europe, Asia and the Caribbean. All who travelled with him have wonderful memories of the fun that is possible when you get out in the world.
Dad had deep faith, and he regularly attended weekly mass at Sacred Heart Church in Walkerton, and daily masses more recently at Copernicus Lodge.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m. on Monday, May 27, 2024, at Sacred Heart Church, Walkerton. Msgr. Dennis Noon officiating. Reception to follow at Walker’s Landing.
Interment in Calvary Cemetery, Walkerton.
As expressions of sympathy, donations to the Walkerton & District Hospital Foundation or Diabetes Canada would be appreciated. Donations and condolences may be made online at www.cameronfuneralhomes.com
The family wishes to express our heartfelt thanks to the wonderful and professional staff at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Centre in Toronto, Copernicus Lodge in Toronto and Maple Court in Walkerton for their tremendous care during his stays with them, and to Woodley Care Services of Owen Sound for always being there when he needed a hand.
